_ Hi, here's a tutorial for California Dreaming by Mamas and Puppas, which I covered a little
while ago and I've just had an avalanche of tutorial requests since, so I better do it for you. _
Alright, this one, it's not too hard.
There's just three [Fm] verses and a solo and they all pretty much use the [E] same chord sequence.
[F]
So _ [C] the intro as well.
So we'll do the intro first.
Capo onto the fourth fret to keep [Ab] it in tune with the album version for this one.
_ _ _ _ Alright, I'll just play the intro for you once.
_ _ [Eb] _ _ _
_ [Dbm] _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
Alright, obviously with the album version there's a [Em] second guitar playing another [Ebm] lead
over the top of that, but just for the solo version this is good enough.
So what you'd need is an [Ab] ASUS2, which is open, open, second, second, open, open.
_ And there's going to be a little pick pattern and then on the second string you're going
to be running down from the third fret, _ [Eb]
first fret, and open on the second string.
So the pick pattern is 4, 3, 2, 4 [Dbm] and then down the second string from the [E] third fret,
[Ab] first fret, open.
And you do that three times.
Fourth, third, second, [Db] fourth.
_ [Ab] _ _
_ Fourth, third, second, [Db] fourth. _ _
[Ab] _ _ Fourth, third, second, fourth.
[Dbm] _ _
[Bb] _ And then you're just going to play an E7sus4, which is basically just [Ab] releasing the fourth
string and then coming up to the fifth string [Eb] on the second fret.
So [Ab] you're basically then just [Abm] playing open, [Eb] second, open, second, open, open. _ _
[Ab] Alright, so it's just going from there [Eb] to there.
_ _ [Ab] _ _ _ [Dbm] So, _
_ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _
_ _ let's do a full strum. _ _
Okay, let's get into the verse now.
[Dbm] _ _
_ I'll just play it once for you.
All the leaves are, [B] all the [A] leaves are [B] brown and the sky [Ab] is gray.
_ _ _ [A] I've [E] been for a [Ab] _ [Dbm] walk [A] on a [Ab] winter's day.
_ _ _ I'd [Dbm] be safe in the [B] world [A] _ [B] if I was [Eb] in LA.
_ [Ab] _ _ _ _ [Abm] California dreaming [A] _ _ [B] on such a [Eb] winter's day.
_ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ [Dbm]
So, A minor is the first chord.
All the leaves are brown.
A minor, [B] _ G, _
[A] _ _ F.
_ If you want to play a full F, go for it.
I do the lazy _ [G] Fmaj7 [A] with the thumb in the bass.
[Ab] However you want to play your [A] F's, it's an F.
[B] And the sky is, back to G, [Eb] gray.
Back to that E7sus4, [Ab] _ and then to E7.
_ _ _ There's quite a bit of that _ E7sus4, back to E7.
_ So [Dbm] again, A [B] minor, _ [A] G, _ F, [B] _ G, [Ab] _ _ _ _
E7sus4, _ _ E7. _ _
Strum, I don't know what I'm doing in terms of up and down,
so you'll kind of have to watch and write it down.
Let me see if I can [Dbm] figure it out.
So [B] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Dbm] it's down, _ [B] up, _ [A] _ _ _ [B] _
down, up, _ [Eb] _ down, _ _
_ [Ab] up, up, down, down, up. _
_ Ridiculous strumming patterns, seriously.
_ Basically [Dbm] it's the down, [B] down, down, [A] up on the F.
I think that's the only up [Fm] on the [Dbm] bar. _ _
_ [B] _ _ [A] _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _
Then when you come into the,
[A] _ up in for a, an F in there before [E] a C.
Up in [Ab] for a, E7.
[Dbm] _
Walk, E minor.
On [A] a winter's day, [Eb] F, _ G, E7sus4, [Ab] _
E7.
_ _ _ So, [A] _
up in [E] for a _ [Ab] walk, [Dbm] _ _
on [A] a [Eb] winter's day. _
_ [Ab] _ _ And then again,
A, B, [Dbm] C, A minor, [B] G, [A] F, [B] _
G, [Eb] _ _ E7sus4,
_ [Ab] _
_ _ _ [Dbm] California, A minor, [B]
G, [A] F, [B] _ G.
[Eb] And then stay on the E7sus4 at the end of the verse.
[Ab] _ You don't go down to the E7. _ _
Stay on the [Abm] E7sus4.
_ [B] And _ repeat [Gb] exactly the same for verse [Dbm] 2.
A minor, [Ab] so stepped [Dbm] into a church, A [B] minor, F,
[Ab] _
[Db] sorry, A [B] minor, G, _ [A] F,
[B] passed a long jeep [Gb] away, E7sus4, _ [Ab] E7.
Well I [A] can't come down, to the F,
[E] _ please, C, [Ab] _ E7, [Dbm] A minor,
and I [A] pretended, F, to [Eb] play, pray, _ E7sus4, [Ab] _ E7.
And you're the creature [Dbm] most of cold, A minor, [A] G, F, [B] G,
[Ab] _ _ _ E7sus4, E7, _ _ _ [Dbm] A minor, [B] G, [A] F, [B] _ G.
[Eb] Stay on the E7 again.
_ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _
Okay, so they're the verse sequences.
[Abm] There's a little solo bit now, where there's the flute [Dbm] part. _ _ _
_ _ Sometimes, yeah, you can throw that little, _
on that A7, on that A minor,
[Bb] you can release the second string of the A minor,
[Dbm] back on [Ab] again, and then up to the third,
[Dbm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _
just to try and get that little [Dbm] flute bit in there a bit.
_ _ Rather than go to a G here,
I prefer just to bring the [Ab] G into the bass,
and play the [Fm] A minor 7, and put the G [E] into the bass.
_ _ Because you still want to keep that note,
you can still hear that note in the [B] solo.
If you go to the G, [E] you'll lose that note.
[F] So, _ _ [Dbm] _ _ _ just release the third string of the [E] A minor,
and come up to the G over the A minor,
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Ab] _ C, E7, [Dbm] A minor, _ F, [Ab] _ _ _ E7sus4, to E7.
So, same sequence from the verse, after that [Dbm] point. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
It can run up as well, [Gb] when you're doing that G over the [E] A minor 7.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] C, E7, [Dbm] A minor, [Ab] F, _ _ E7sus4, _ _ E7.
And then [Db] it's just the same sequences from the [A] verse, twice.
[B] _ _ [Ab] _ _
_ _ _ _ And [Dbm] again, _
[B] _ _ [A] _ _ [B] _ _ [Ab] and again, just sitting on the E7sus4,
coming out of the solo.
[Dbm]
All [B] the [A] leaves are brown, [B] and the sky [Eb] is grey.
[Ab] _ _ _ [A] I've [E] been for a [Ab] while, _ [Dbm] _ [A] but I [Ab] will stay.
_ _ _ _ If [Dbm] I didn't [B] tell, _ [A] _ [B] I would be [Ab] here today.
_ [Ab] _ _ _ _ [Abm] Can't find [Gb] dreaming, _ [A] _ [B] I'm such [Dbm] a winner's day.
Now, when you're coming out of the outro part now,
[Fm] rather than go to the [Dbm] E7, just back [B] to the A minor,
the G, [A] to the F, [B]
back to the G, back to the A minor,
G, [A] F, [B] _ G, you're a [Eb] winner's day.
So, the A, E7sus4 there, _ _ [Ab] back to E7,
and then, the [Dbm] solo on A minor. _
Alright?
_ _ So, [Ab] _ _
yeah, I've [C] probably rushed through the end of [Eb] that a bit,
like [Ab] I tend to quite often,
but hopefully that's enough for [G] California Dreaming. _
And I have to [Eb] also pay a bit of a [B] _ thanks to Justin [Ab] Sandico's tutorial as well.
I must admit, I did refer to that when I was doing my version as well.
So, they're pretty much identical.
[E] So, go and check out Justin's as well.
[Ab] His is far more detailed than mine.
Anyway,
