♫ How to play "NO TURNING BACK" by Israel Houghton (easy piano lesson tutorial) chords
Start Jamming...
Hey, Piano Clubhouse.
I want to show you a song called no turning back by Israel Houghton and Aaron Lindsay
It's in the key of E flat minor so the scale for that would be E [F] flat [Gb] F
G flat [F] A flat B [B] flat C [Db] flat D [Eb] flat and E flat
[Bb] I want to explain that in this scale B is flat and so [B] don't be thrown off by
What you think was being B natural I'm going to call it C flat most of the time [N] so in this scale C is flat
So don't be thrown off by that
This tune has some repetitive parts that are pretty easy
And it's got some other more dense and challenging parts
So hopefully we can make them all approachable, but it does take some time to learn this tune to stick with me
Okay, the first thing we're gonna.
Do is play this repetitive vamp in the beginning and so the bass plays
An E flat on [Eb] beat one and then the piano part and the guitar gonna come in with
[Ebm] E flat G flat D, and then I'm gonna keep this E flat and G flat and then just move the top note down
With the chord so we're gonna end up with this and [C] [B] [C]
[Db] [C] [B]
[C] it just repeats with that pattern
So we [Db] start off with D flat and then go [Cm] to C [B] and then go to C flat
okay, so that repeats through the intro and then [Ebm] also through the verse so I
[Eb]
Almost [B] gave up
Thought I'd had enough and [B] so on and so forth so the first time that it changes is at the pre-chorus
It was where we starting to get some into some chords, so
What we're gonna have is I'm not forsaken
You never [Eb] leave in [Bb] and that keep on moving
forward you
[Ebm] Let's go
[A] And then [B] the course we're [B] back to the vamp
So let's dig into the pre-chorus a little bit the first chord that we're gonna have is a C flat major 7
So C flat or B in the bass over C flat E flat G flat B
flat
It's gonna play it just like that.
I'm gonna do it twice
I'm not forsaken
So the first one is right on beat one the second one is on the end of four
two three
Four okay, so it's just [Eb] a stab and a hit with the rest of the band and then the next chord is kind of funky
It's an E flat 7 with a sharp 9 and sharp 5 so if we look at the chord.
It's gonna be an E flat
G
B flat it would be the normal fifth we're gonna sharp that [Em] raise it a half step to B
And then we have the seventh is D flat [Eb] and then the ninth would normally be F
But we're gonna raise it to F [Eb] sharp, so here's our E flat 7 sharp [Gb] 9 sharp 5
I'm gonna move the F sharp down an octave
[Db] [G] And I'm gonna keep that B there
And then play the C sharp down [D] here leave the E flat for [Eb] the left hand so end up with [B] this with the C sharp
[Gb] F sharp
[G] G and B natural
[Db] [Eb] over E flat in the bass and
Then from there that's gonna go quickly to an A flat minor 9 [B] chord
So I'm gonna resolve this by taking my pinky down on the [Gb] beat to the a flat and
[B] Let me just get a handle.
That's actually what we're gonna.
Do is gonna end up playing the same chords we played
For the C flat major 7 which is a different bass note so this was C flat major 7
And I'm [Abm] gonna change the bass to a flat
And because of it an A flat minor 9 so from the E flat 7 chord is gonna be this
[Eb]
Okay, so that's pretty quick, and then the [Bb] the chord that the pre-chorus ends on is a B flat 7 sharp 9 sharp 5
It's one of those chords again, so if we look at that a normal B flat 7 would be B flat D F [Bb] a flat
but we're gonna [Gb] sharp the fifth to F sharp and
[Ebm] Include the ninth [Ab] raised half the steps we're gonna end up with [Bb] this for the B flat 7 sharp 9 sharp 5
I'm gonna leave the [Gb] B flat for the left hand and then play these notes.
Just like this in my [D] right hand so D
F sharp [Ab] a flat C [Bb] sharp over B flat in the bass
[D] Just four [B] stabs on that chord so again the pre-chorus is gonna be
not forsaken
You [Eb] never leave in
[Abm] Now [D] keep on moving
[Bb] Forward with you
[B] I'm not forsaken
You [Eb] never leave [Abm] in and I keep [Bm] on moving
forward with [Bb] you
[Ebm] Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go and we're back
[C] [B] [Ab]
[Db] [C] [N] Throughout the chorus, and then we do kind of another intro
It keeps that same vamp and again with the verse from the same vamp then we go through the pre-chorus
So it's just the same thing
Introverse course is repeated again
so that brings us to the bridge and the chords that lead into the bridge are they come kind of fast and furious but
It would be something like this.
I'm gonna simplify this, but if you were to play all the notes
[Abm] It would be something like this
[Ebm] [Dbm]
[B] Okay, [D] let me slow that down a
[Gb]
[Abm] [Ebm] [B]
[Abm] little bit slower still
[Gb] [Abm]
[Ebm] [Dbm] [B]
[N] So if you want to try to get all those notes in there just slow it down take one note
One chord at a time and analyze that if I were playing it myself
I would simplify it a little bit and just play the bass note and one note from the right hand and since I'm choosing that
Note carefully, it's gonna give some semblance of the chord
[B] So I'm gonna keep the same bass note, and then I'm gonna in the right hand.
I'm gonna do
[Abm] [Ebm] [B] So just one note per hand so to look at those notes in the left hand.
I've got C [Bb] flat B [Ab] flat a flat and
[Eb] then E flat [Db] D flat [B] C flat
The right hand is gonna play [Eb] D flat sorry E [Db] flat D flat [B] C flat
G flat [Em] E E
flat
So together that [B] sounds like this
[Bbm] [Abm] [B] again
[Bbm] [Ebm] [B] [Gb] We're gonna end up playing that a couple more times so the lead into the bridge sounds [Db] like
[C] [Bb] [Abm] I
[Db]
Come into the kingdom
Such a time is this and we're gonna play a [Bb] chord
That's F.
I'm sorry E flat minor 11 if we [Ebm] looked at that would be E flat G flat B flat
and then the seventh nine, I'm sorry the
[Eb] Seven and eleven [Gb] would be that
[Db] It's right seven nine eleven would be that okay, so there we go
So [Ebm] we have E flat G flat [Eb] B flat D flat F and a flat now
I'm gonna take the lower two notes off of it
