[A#m] This is a song that was a big, big [G] hit for me.
As a matter of fact, it went all the way to number one on my second [N] album.
And even though I'm very proud of the fact that the song did so well,
and I'm proud that I was one of the writers on the song,
and I'm proud of of the fact that so many people have enjoyed it.
The thing that I love the most about doing this particular record
was the video that we did for it, because we [D#] shot the video
for this particular song in a veterans clinic in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
And [Em] [A] [A#] I have to admit to you, I was very nervous
because I was supposed to [B] play a disabled American veteran in [F#] this [N] video.
And I was nervous before we started shooting
because I never served in the military.
And I was afraid that all these military people, all these veterans
were going to look at me and go, who does he think he is [A#] trying to play one of us?
You know, who's this guy?
I think he is.
He's never served.
And so we went in the first day [E] and I sat down in my wheelchair
to get ready to start filming.
[N] And immediately I was surrounded [G] by a bunch of [N] veterans
because everybody in the video, with the exception of myself
and like three other actors, were all either patients
or staff members at this veterans clinic.
And I was surrounded by these guys immediately.
And they I found them to be some of the kindest,
sweetest, most genuine, honest, down home
people I had ever been around in my entire life.
And they accepted me with open arms and they seemed to be [A#] just glad
that somebody was telling their story.
[Em] [E] And so [G] a few weeks later, when we finished the video,
we came back to that same veterans clinic and we debuted the video
right there in front of all the people [B] that actually had been in it.
[D#] And as I looked out in the [N] crowd, as the video was playing behind me,
I did not see a dry eye in the place.
And that touched my heart.
[E] So as soon as I got [G] home, I called my [N] local congressman and I said, listen,
I don't know if there's anything I can do, but if there's anything
that I can possibly do to help with veterans and veterans issues
and be a spokesman for veterans, I want to be involved in that.
And so as [A#]
a result of that, I had the wonderful privilege
and opportunity of [Gm] serving as the celebrity chairman and celebrity
spokesperson [G#] for the Disabled American [E] Veterans Association for four years in a row.
[D#]
[F#] [G] And then for two [D] years after that, I [A#] served in the same capacity
for the VFW, the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
[D#] And the thing that was so cool about that for me
[Bm] was the fact that during that entire six year period,
I had the chance [A#] to travel all over [G#] the United States and get a chance.
If there was a [F#] veterans clinic within [G] 125 miles of where we were performing
that night, I had a chance during the day to go and visit with that veterans clinic.
And get a chance [A#] to sit down and [Gm] shake hands with and [D#m] talk with
[G] and get to know people.
If you looked up the word hero in the [B] dictionary,
their faces should be right there [N] next to that word.
So I basically said all that just to say this,
and I mean this from the [Em] bottom of my heart to all of the men and women
in this country who have ever worn the uniform
and have ever served and all the men and women
who are currently [Gm] serving in our military to protect our freedoms.
From [N] the bottom of my heart.
Thank you so much.
And thank you to your families as well, because they sacrifice as well.
God bless you all.
You're the best in the world.
We love you.
God bless you.
[Em] And God bless the United States [Gm] of America.
