Well [D] it's a good day for singing the song and [A] it's a good day [Bm] for moving along.
Yes it's a good day, how could anything go [F] wrong?
[Em] A good day from morning [D] to night.
So we wanted to do an album with my old friend Leon Rausch.
Leon is the last great singer from the Texas Playboy bands.
And he's been a friend of ours for 37 years and has worked with
The Sleep at the Wheel for many years and I felt like let's do an album
Western [C] Swing with old Leon.
Well let's get Leon to do his stuff.
We've [Gm] done a [F] lot of [C] concerts together, [Gbm] we've done [Gm] TV [F] together,
we've [C] done it but never recorded any music together.
Now that he gets a [E] chance to do that.
[F] Alright, I say we just run it two, three times.
This is a [B] follow up album to Willie and the Wheel, which was
The Sleep at the Wheel with Willie Nelson doing old [A] Western Swing.
This album is the songs that I've always wanted to hear Leon sing.
You [D] know you gotta [Eb] get going [E] if you're gonna make [F] a showing
[Gbm] And you [Fm] know you've got to [Em] ride away
[F] I met Leon in 1973 in Dallas where Bob Wills was recording
what was to be his last album called For the Last Time.
And we were all impressed with these kids.
[D] They were kids in those days, just punk kids.
I was a kid, you know, I was 22 years old.
But we were impressed because [A] we'd heard them play,
we'd [Bm] heard some of their records [A] and heard some of their music.
And we were very impressed with [D] it.
[A]
[D]
[Em]
[Bm] [Dbm]
[A] [D]
These guys know exactly what's going on.
And they [A] tell me [G] what key I sung these songs in, I didn't even know.
[C] F sharp minor, yeah, whole step, F sharp [E] minor, B major.
[A]
[Gm] [F] I'm from Pennsylvania originally and Bob Wills was [Em] not a household word around my house.
[D] But when I first heard him I went, wow, this is the [C] guy, this is what I like.
This is fiddle [E] music, jazz, blues, swing, country [Gb] all wrapped into one.
And you can wear a cowboy hat while [C] you're doing it.
[B] [F]
[C]
[G] [C]
[E] [Am]
We got [Em] to thinking and researching [B] this thing in our [G] head.
Well, this bunch here [Cm] might be the ones to take over [E] and play western [F] swing [G] music.
[Dm] And [G] Ray was [C] right all [Am] over that.
One thing about us, The Wheel Players, is that we've got the best players.
[E] Jason Roberts on [Cm] fiddle and mandolin, Eddie Rivers on [C] steel, Dan [E] Walton [F] on piano.
I'm a dancer, I'm a dancer 24 [Bm] years old.
So [Eb] we span from the [Bb] 20s to the 80s in age groups on this record.
This gives me a little renewed [Bbm] energy.
[C] And I'm at [Fm] age now, [Bbm] I'll be 83 in October.
[E] A lot of people don't [Eb] realize that in the [C] world of [D] musicians,
[Am] age means nothing.
It's [Eb] all about talent.
[Ab] [F] [C] It's [Bb] a group of [F] 60 or 70.
[Eb] In [N] about 1974, Leon said to us,
Hey, you ought to do Route 66 as a boogie-woogie like you all do.
It was Leon's suggestion and [Bb] it was one of our signature tunes.
[Ab] [Eb]
[F] [G]
[C] [F] This
[Eb] [D] [Bb] [N] is a song that has been one of our signature songs.
And Leon was the one who suggested that we do it the way that we do it.
So I said, OK, on this record, Leon's going to sing this with us.
[Gm] So it brings it full circle.
[F] [C]
[Fm]
[Am] Not only did we do on this [C] record the Western swing standard, [Am] Sugar Moon, a great Bob Wills tune,
[Bm] [Am] but we [C] also [G] did some Count Basie [C] stuff, a Joe Williams classic,
which is a duet with Elizabeth [Gm] and Leon called Well Alright, Well OK.
[G] [A]
[E]
So you wanted to sing unison on [G] that?
I think so.
And then there was a couple of old pop tunes.
We did a great Peggy Lee [E] song called It's a Good Day [D] and It's Hot.
I said to the [Bm] sun, [Am] sadly [Em] I'm morning sun, [E] rising [A] shine today.
You [D] know you gotta get [Eb] going if [E] you're gonna [F] make a showing,
[Gbm] and you know [F] you got to ride [Em]
away.
[F] The music [Bb] itself has been a magic to all of us.
[D]
And Sleep at the Wheel has [Eb]
carried the ball as far [Ab] as keeping those old tunes [G] alive.
And we're [Cm] just proud as we can be [G] of Ray and all the guys.
[E] It's been [Em] wonderful because he's such a good friend.
[E] And we've rode so many roads with Leon that it was just fun.
[C] And I love each and [Gm] every one of them.
[G] They're all good [D] musicians and [C] good people.
[G]
Gosh, I just love this [C] band.
[G] And [D] it's [Em] a treat for anybody that comes to see the concert.
And so we try to maybe [E] [Bm] capture a little of that on record and see what happens.
Yes, [Db] it's a good day from morning [Bm] till night.
[D]
Oh, [Db] it's a good day from [D] morning till night.
Cause [Db] it's a good day from morning [Bbm] till [Eb] night.
[Abm] [Gbm] I'm really enthused about [E] this.
I'm really [D] excited about it.
[Bb] All over again, one more time.
That's it!
I used to do this for a living.
