[A] Hi folks, I'm John Reischman with Peghead Nation and today we're going to learn an original
of mine called It's Been Real.
This is one of the first tunes I ever wrote.
I didn't name it though.
I have to make that disclaimer right off the bat.
It's written, named by Paul Shalaski.
But it's basically a fiddle tune, although the form is A A B A rather than A A B B.
So the tune is in the key of A major and it's good to familiarize yourself with what notes
you'll be playing.
So we'll just play an A major scale in two octaves.
[D] [Ab] [A]
[Bm] [E]
Doesn't [G] hurt to, you know, you could play those all as downstrokes or alternate [A] them.
And you can also explore, you know, scale patterns where you go up three, [B] [Db] [A] back to the first.
[Bm]
[B] [D] [E] [Bb]
[Bb]
[Ab] [E]
[A] I [G] find that sort of pattern is helpful to practice.
You could practice it with a metronome, you know, vary the speed.
[B] But that's the A major scale.
Let's start with the first phrase of the A part.
[E] [Dbm]
[G] And it's again.
[B]
[E]
[Dbm] [D] Then the next phrase is over a D chord.
Walking up the scale.
And then same phrasing over E chord.
[Ab] So those [D] together [E]
[Ab] is the second [D] phrase.
[Gb] [E]
Back to the first.
[B]
[E]
[G] It's got a few extra notes to set you up for the final phrase.
[E]
So the whole A section.
[B] [Gbm] [D]
[E]
[Ab] [B]
[E]
[B] [D] [Em]
[Ab] [A]
[B] [E]
[Db] [Gbm] I [D]
[E]
[B]
[E] [B]
[D] [Ab]
[A] tend to slide into the A on the D string so you have both A on the D and an open A ringing.
I find it helpful when learning a tune that has a little bit of syncopation to it to keep
a subtle, steady up and down motion in an eighth note pattern for these fiddle tunes.
So if you think one and two and three and four is the underlying rhythm throughout the
tune, still keep your hand moving even though you're not sounding a note.
[G] The second [D] phrase.
[E] [D]
[E] I can actually hear it.
I don't know if you can hear that, but it's, [B] there's a little percussive sound of my palm
gliding on there.
So that helps.
I find that helpful to make sure everything's sorted out with the pick direction for the right beat.
Let's play both A sections.
One two three.
[E]
[Dbm] [B] [D]
[Em] [Bm]
[B] [E]
[B] [Bm]
[Ab] [A]
[B] [E]
[Dbm] [D]
[Em] Three four.
[Bm] [B]
[E] [B]
[Bm]
[D] So I'm trying to keep my hand moving through those phrases where there's a little hole
in the phrasing.
Three [E] four.
Just like [Eb] that.
I've tried to make it obvious when the chords change.
So I'm trying to, in the melody, outline the chord in a very clear way.
[A] So the first phrase is right over A [B] chord.
[D] [Dbm] Second phrase is over a D chord, [D] starting on a D.
So it's three notes of the D chord
with a scale tone of E.
The next phrase is [E] over E chord.
[Ab] [B]
[E] [B]
[D] [G] [Ab]
[E] [B]
[Db] [D] [B]
