So listen, no seriously, the Young Adult Choir, we had a plan, there's a plan.
Sit down, [Eb]
[Db] sit down, [Bm]
sit down.
So there's a plan, and the plan was to give, pay homage to the ancestors that brought us over,
[F]
to pay homage to it.
[Bb] [Db] I was talking to the Young Adult Choir this week about the fact that this is Black History Month.
When I was a child, we focused on it.
We studied it in school.
[Fm] The whole curriculum would change for 28 days, and we would learn about Harriet Tubman,
learn about Martin Luther King and Medgar Evers.
We would learn what was going on in our culture.
We would learn about the songs that our ancestors would sing that brought us over.
Spirituals like Steal Away [G] and Wade [C] in the Water.
And while they didn't have biblical proportions necessarily,
they would give [Fm] our people what they needed to keep going, to keep striving, to [N] not give up,
and to survive through the most difficult times in our culture and in our [Fm] history.
I thought about it once again.
[Bbm] [Db] We're faced with adversity [Bb] that our people have seen before.
When we were talking about it, I realized by taking the poll
that some of our members didn't even know Lift Every Voice and Sing.
[G]
[Ab] Tell Earth and Heaven Ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty.
Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies.
Let it resound [C] loud as the rolling seas.
It's the [F] sound that brought our people over.
It's the sound that made us triumph through adversity.
[Fm] So this morning, to celebrate Black History Month,
to celebrate [Gb] the songs and the sound that [Fm] our people would sing that brought us over,
we decided [C] to take you [F] back in [Gm] sound [Fm] and in time to [C] a place where the songs weren't as complex,
[Ab] but the message was [Eb] emotional.
It was [Fm] strong, and it would get our people through.
So this morning, we're going to take y'all back, if that's all right,
to a song, to a sound that reminds us that Jesus is a rock in a weary land.
[Db]
[Eb]
[Fm]
Jesus is a rock [C] in a [Fm] weary land.

Jesus [Db]

He's a [Db] shelter in [C] the time of
[N] storm.
[Cm]
[Ab] [Gb] Jesus is a rock in a [F] weary land, a weary [E] land, a weary [Cm] land.
[Fm] Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a shelter in [Bb] the time [Fm] of storm.
Jesus [G] is a rock [F] in a weary land, a weary [G] land, [Fm] a [Eb] weary land.
[Fm] Jesus is a rock in a weary [F] land, a shelter [C] in the time of [Fm] storm.
[C] [Bbm] I would not be [Fm] a sinner.
[Bbm] I'll tell you the [Fm] reason why.
[Bbm] Pray [Db] my Lord [Fm] might call me [D] home, and I would [Eb] not be ready [Fm] to die.
Jesus [Db] is a [Fm] rock in a weary [Ab] land, [Em] a weary land, [Fm] a [F] [Bb]
[Fm] weary land, a shelter [C] in the time of storm.
[F]
[Bbm] I would not be [Fm] a sinner.
[Db] I'll tell you [G] the reason [Fm] why.
[Bbm] Pray my Lord might [Ab] call me [Bb] home, and I would [Eb] not be ready to [C]
[Dbm] [Fm] die.
Jesus is a rock in a [Bb] weary land, [Db] a weary land, [Fm] a weary land, a shelter [C] in the time of [Fm] storm.
He never made a [Em] way.
[F]
He never stepped in just right on time.
And he knew what pain you were going through.
[Fm] Has he [C] ever placed your feet on solid ground?
[Fm] Then you know he is [Gm] a rock [F] in a weary land, [C] a
[Fm] [G] weary land, [Fm] and you know he [C] is a rock in [Fm] a weary land, a [G] shelter in the time [Fm] of storm.
Has he ever made [Em] a way when you didn't have a [Fm] dime?
He never stepped in just right on time.
Has he ever picked you up when you were down?
Has he ever [C] placed your feet on [Db] solid [Bbm] [Fm] ground?
Then you know he [Cm] is a rock in [Ab] a weary [C]
land, a weary [Db] land, [Fm] a weary [Eb] land, [Ab] and you know he [Eb] is a rock in [Ab] a weary [D] land, [Fm] a shelter in the time of storm.
Has he ever made a way when you didn't have a dime?
Has he ever stepped in just right on time?
Has he ever picked you up when you were down?
Has he [C] ever placed your feet on [Db] solid [Fm] ground?
Then you know he [G] is a rock in [Fm] a [Cm] weary [D] land, [Em] a weary land, [Fm] a weary [Bb] land, and you know [Fm] he [E] is a [Fm] rock in a weary land, [G] a shelter [C] [Fm]
