Hey, this is Bennett and you're watching Melodification.
In this series I take a standard Scruggs tune like Mountain Dew and I show you how to play
first the Scruggs version and then a melodic style version that I make up.
I just want to show you the similarities between Scruggs style and melodic style and hopefully
shed some light on how you can kind of blend both into your playing.
The tab is always free.
You can sign up for my mailing list to get that.
The link is below this video.
Remember I have a membership site now so if you enjoy my videos and enjoy my free content
on YouTube, please consider joining that.

Just lots of great banjo stuff to make you a better player.
Thanks so much for watching and enjoy Mountain Dew.

[N] Alright, so in this version of Mountain Dew, really what I'm doing is I'm taking the melody
down the neck and I'm interpreting it up the neck in a melodic break.
So [E] this melody.
[A]
And then instead of [B] doing the slides [Bb] or doing it Scruggs style, [A]
[B] it's essentially the same
thing, it's just in a melodic style.
And I'm going down.
[A]
That's all G.
And then I'm ending [Gbm] up on the third [G] of the four chord.
[A] [Gb]
[B]
[A]
And that's really just like a melodic style lick.
You feel free to steal that from me.
That's [Ab] the point of these videos.
But you know, I think I've done that several times over a four chord when I'm improvising
or in other tunes, other arrangements maybe.
But I kind of like that ascending, then back down, [Abm] descending that leads you back to [A] that low G.
[Gb]
[A]
And [B] that last lick that I just did of [Ab] course was a Scruggs lick.
[E]
And then back into the melody.
[A]
But I actually do a chromatic thing, so I [B] go to [E]
[Am] spice it up a little bit.
And then the melody at that part in the [B] Scruggs version is
[A] So I go
I've been watching a [Bb] lot of Alison Brown lately and I really like the way that she uses the
melody on the second string and [E] has the first string in like a drone.
So that's kind of what I'm doing there.
[A]
[B] I've done these ascending scales before, but this is one, two, three, four, [E] five.
And on that fifth note, I'm actually starting a descending thirds [B] pattern.
[E] [A]
That thirds pattern ends right here [Am] on that A [E] note.
[A]
And then I go to the [E] scale.
And that's the arrangement.
Pretty simple, [Eb] pretty straightforward.
[G] If you have any questions at all, please comment in the comment section.
