Hi, I'm Rick Emmett from Triumph and here we are in the CBC studio once again with my double neck guitar
And we're going to look at a song called never surrender which was
1982-83 ish and
It was a real double neck kind of song
when we originally
started writing this it had a kind of a chord progression that had a
reggae kind of feel underneath a very
Plotting rock but reggae kind of feel and so the chord progression
Which is a little bit complicated had a kind of a feel like this
[E] [Am]
[D] [E] [Em] [D]
[Am] [E]
So that was the basic thing it had that ba ba ba ba ba ba the
Two little sort of triplet figures to end the thing and it's in an odd time signature
the chord progression was like an e minor 7 a
[Em]
[D] D and then it was an a minor 7, but it had a rolly kind of lick in it.
That [Em] was
[D]
[C] [D] [E] The two [C] arpeggios to end which is a C major [D] D [A] major
[Em] [D] [C]
[E] [Em]
[Bm] [E] [C] [D]
[E] [Em] Out of [D] the streets
[Am] Inspiration comes [D] hard
[E] [Em]
How [D] it works?
[Am] Just keep repeating and then it had two chord shots that were like
[Bm] Because the song actually started with three chord shots which were an a minor 11 a B [B] minor 11 and an e
[Em] minor 7 add 11 and this is very 12 [Am] stringy you get the sound of these
[Em]
boom [Am] whack
[Em]
[E] boom whack
[Em]
So [A] you get that reggae hard rock kind of thing, but you're getting this
[B] Washy
[Em] 12 string through a chorus kind of sound and that set up the progression that I just showed you
[D]
And then later on in the [B] tune
I would switch next and switch patches so that I could play the riff
Main riff behind the solo and I'll show that to you now pretty simple and a lot of fun [E] to play is
[B]
[A] [C] [Bm]
[E] That's going like a
[C] [B] C B a G [F#] F sharp [D] and [E]
[A] you can turn the [E] single notes into power chords if you want
[F#] [A] [C]
[B]
[E] [Em] kind of fun
[F#m] [Em]
[N]
