[N] Hello folks, hope you're all well.
Today we're going to look at the guitar part from a pretty
cool track that came up with a student recently.
It's Rap Snitch Kanishes by MF Doom.
I think
I've said that right, Kanishes, and I've looked it up, apparently is some kind of pastry.
The guitar part on the track itself is a sample, and it's a sample of a song by David Matthews,
and the David Matthews song is a cover of Space Oddity by David Bowie.
So that is three
good reasons to have a go at this lick.
The sample [Fm] on the MF Doom track is sped up slightly,
so if you were to play along in standard tuning, I'm in standard tuning today, you'll find
that your guitar feels slightly out of tune.
Obviously you can get around that by just
tuning your guitar up to meet [Eb] the track, [N] and I looked at it and it's about 40-ish cents
sharper than standard tuning if you want to have a go at that.
Or you could keep cranking
the strings until it sounds about right.
I've made a slowed down backing track that
I'm going to perform to today so you can see exactly what's happening, and if you want
the backing track, if you want a copy of it, just let me know in the comments or drop us
an email and I'll send it to you.
The best way to learn anything like this is to break
it down into smaller sections, and that's what we're going to do today.
So let's get
started.
Okay, so the first lick slowly sounds something like [A] this.
[D] [B] So you can see it starts
there with the bend on the 17th fret, and moves down through that little shape there.
[Ab]
Now [Bm]
my plectrum, after that first pick, picks it up on the 15th [Gm] fret, so we do a whole [A]
bend
up and down, [G]
and then follow back down that little chord at the 14th, 15th and 16th fret.
The chord that we reach at the 14th fret, you make by playing the E string, then the
B string, then the G [B] string.
We've got a similar phrase, [D] and again we're on the 17th fret but
we're on the B string this time.
[Gbm]
[D] Now I think this is the hardest phrase of the whole piece
potentially.
[Gbm]
[C] So we have our bend, keep that in tune, [Ab] which I didn't then of course, [D]
and
again a little run down but a different chord shape this time.
The hard part here is that
[Am] we've got to go
[Bm] 15 [Bb] and [Gbm] then move back to 14, and that is where our chord lives.
[Am]
After
our [Ab] bend, let's get it in tune, [Bm]
there's your 15, move back, [Eb] 14 on the B, 14 [D] on the G, [Gb] 16
on [B] the D, and 14 on the G.
This is another pretty hard lick that I struggled with to
be honest.
It's
[Abm] two bends at the 17th on the B again, [Gb]
[G] and then we're doing a [Ab] pre-bend,
so we've already bent up there and we're going to hit it, [Dbm]
and we're going to pull off to
14,
[Ab] [A]
[Ab] like so, and that's all on the B string.
Then you've got these two interesting notes
at the 16th fret of the G string, where they actually need to start slightly bent,
[Bm] like
so.
[Abm] The hard part here is that we're actually catching those notes as we bring them down
from a bent position, so I'll [N] show you that really slowly.
[A] [Abm]
[B] [Abm]
And then the final two notes
are 14 and 16 on the G.
The next bit is easier, and it's just two notes, like a siren sort
of effect, 14th fret on the E, 16th fret on the B, and you just kind of play between [Ebm] them.
Now if you watch my performance, what I'm trying to do here is kind of not have them
hanging over each other too much, so that's, [D] there's two slight variations with the final
phrase depending on which chord is happening in the song.
So you're going to have to listen
for that, and it sort of happens every few bars you get this different chord, which is
the E chord.
It starts like this.
So pretty straightforward, 15 on the B, and then between
14 and 17 on the E.
The very last bit is that, just between those two notes, so I'll put
that together, that's the first version of it.
[N] And then from there you'd
