Okay, let's see if I can make this video make sense.
So I've been a fan of the vlog brothers Hank and John Green for a really long time, and
in January of last year I read Hank's debut novel, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing.
In the book, April May, a 20-something graphic designer stumbles upon what she thinks is
a sculpture of a giant robot on her way home from work.
She calls up her friend Andy, they make a video about it where she gives it the name
Carl, and she wakes up the next morning to find that the video has gone viral.
It turns out there are 64 Carls all over the world, nobody knows how they got there, and
April and Andy were the first to break the story.
As the world tries to unravel the mystery of the sculptures, April finds herself at
the center of the narrative.
It's a story about the internet, and [Gm] fame, and fame in the [Ab] context of the internet, and
online communities, and also aliens.
Anyway, I really liked the book.
And I also like musicals.
But I'd never written a musical theater song before.
I got [F] the idea to take the first couple [Ab] of chapters and imagine them as a song from a musical.
[N]
Then this happened.
Hank saw my video and invited me to join him at the Austin stop of his book tour for the
paperback release of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing.
Here are some shots from that.
I sang Fly Me to the Moon, talked about going viral, and I got to play the song I'd been working on.
The sequel to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is out now.
It's called A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor.
I've been playing the song in virtual tour events this past week, so I might as well
post it here.
[C] The song's called Remarkable.

[Gm] I know that [Bbm] I'm remarkable.
[F] Now I don't know who made him, but [C] I know a thing or two
[D] About wanting some acknowledgement [C] when I've made something new.
I [F] know the feeling when [B] a creation you [C]
[Cm] adore
And the [F] blood and sweat [Bb] you poured
[F] Go unnoticed and [C] ignored
And you think, is there [F] anyone out there
[B] Anyone watching what [Cm] I do?
Does [F] someone [Bb] have a clue?
[F] Oh, if someone [Gm] only knew
[G]
I've been living in New York for a while
And there's [Bb] something that I'm figuring out
You can say you don't see [C] that every day
Every day in this [Gm] beautiful town
It's all just [Bbm] so remarkable
[F]
Things like this, they come along
And they blow [Dbm] us all away
Then before you can [A] blink
[Dm]
Everybody's moving on to the [Bb] next
New, perfect, and remarkable thing
[G]
[A] [Bb] [D] [F] It's easy to feel jaded
And [C] it's easy to [F] feel numb
[Dm] There's a million awesome [F] things
So what's [C] a million and one?
But [F] take a moment, look [B] at what people can [C]
create
[Cm] Something [F] different, [Bb] something great
[F] Can we just [C]
appreciate?
Is there [F] anyone out there
[B] Anyone watching what [Cm] we do?
Does [F] someone have a clue?
Oh, if someone [C] only knew
That [Gm]
people [Bbm] are remarkable
[F] We reach into [B] the dark and pull
[Gm] The greatest [C] piece of art
That you'll [F] ever see
Look at the function
Look at the form
Look at the [C] way that he strays [D] from the norm
Look [F] how he stands as tall [Bb] as the [F] stars
Can't [Dm] you just feel how small [C] we all are?
Maybe [F] we'll never figure him out
But maybe the [C] question is what [D] it's about
[Gm] People convening to [F] find meaning [C] together somehow
[F] Is there anyone out there
Anyone [B] watching what [C] we do?
[Cm]
Does someone [F] have [C] a clue?
