[UPDATED] Duvet - bôa - guitar tutorial (strumming/chords) chords
Start Jamming...
Alright, hello everyone.
Welcome back to Duvet by BoA.
If you haven't seen my other video
I did on this song, you don't need to see it before watching this one.
This one will
be a standalone kind of thing.
But I did do like a simple tutorial on an easy way that
you can play this song a while back, and I got a comment from someone pointing out how
the chord voicings that I had shown in that tutorial are actually different from what's
used in the original recording of the song.
So I thought I'd do a follow up video and
kind of go into more detail and show you as best I can how this song was originally played
by BoA.
The first chord of this song is going to be a G add 6.
So you're going to take your
regular G chord shape, but leave your top E string [E] open.
So what you'll get is [G] bottom
E string 3rd fret, [Bm] A string 2nd fret, and then [G] you'll play the B string 3rd fret as
well.
And then everything else is open.
So 3, 2, open, open, 3, open.
[N] From there, you'll
go to your B minor shape, but again leave that top E string open.
That top E string
is going to stay open throughout the verse.
So you'll play index finger [B] on your A string
2nd fret, [F#] then D string 4th [Bm] fret, G string 4th fret, B string 3rd fret, [E] and your open
E string.
[Bm] [E] There we go.
Third chord is your E minor 7.
You're going to play your E minor
chord, that's play the 2nd fret of your A and D strings, and then you're also going
to add that 3rd fret B string.
[Em] [N] So the verse all [G] together sounds like this.
[Bm] [Em]
[Bm] [G]
[Bm] [Em]
[Bm] [E] For the chorus,
you're going to play [A#m] an E minor [E] chord, but all the way up here.
Put your index finger
on the A string 7th fret, then play D string 9, G string 9, and [Em] B string 8.
Then [E] [Em] you're
[E] going to play this kind of high register E minor [Em] chord.
[E] Next what you're going to [N] do
is bring your index finger down to the E string.
So you're going to make a power chord shape
on that note.
[B] That's going to be 7, 9, 9, and [Bm] then you're going to mute the string above
that, [E] so that's not going to ring out at all, and leave your top two strings open.
[B]
[E] Then
you're [B] going to slide [C] that shape [G] down to the [G] 3rd fret, index finger on the 3rd fret,
3, 5, 5, and then your middle finger is going to play [N] the 4th fret on your G [G] string there.
Again, those top two strings stay open.
So that chorus rhythm [Em] is going to be this.
[G]
[Em] [B] [G] The last time you're just going to leave, you're just going to play that last chord
one time and let it ring.
Okay, next up things are going to get a bit tricky because [N] this is
the section that has kind of a fingerpicking solo, and what we're going to do is we're going
to play the chords that go under that.
In the original recording, there's no guitar that's
actually strumming these chords, so the strumming patterns I've written out for you in the tab on
screen here are just like a rhythm that fits.
It's not something that was played in the original
recording, just so you know.
So you're going to start [G] with your G major bar chord, that's index
finger on the 3rd fret, [Cm] and just across all those frets, [G]
and then you'll play your A string 5,
D string 5, and your [G] G string 4.
[E]
Next you're going to go up to that E minor chord up on the 7th fret
here that we did earlier, but instead of leaving strings open, you're going to bar across, so you're
playing the 7th fret of that top string.
So that goes 7, [Em] 9, 8, 7.
Take [E] that same shape, slide it [G] all the way
down to your 2nd fret.
[B] So we've got 2, [Bm] 4, 4, 3, 2.
[C#m] Then up two frets, 4, 6, 6, 5, 4.
[E] Then you're going to move
it up one fret, except you're going to change the shape a bit so it's a major chord, so that's going
to be [D] 5, 7, 7, 7, 5.
Some people also like to play that shape with just the one finger barred across
these three strings.
[G#m] You don't necessarily have to [A] get that top note, it's a bit [N] tricky to get it
when you play it that way.
After that you're going to move all the way up to the 9th fret and go back
to that minor chord shape, [F#m] so 9, 11, 11, 10, 9.
[N] Back [Em] down to the 7th fret and play that E minor chord again.
Then what you're going to do is take your pinky off of the [Fm] G string and move it down to [G] the 10th fret
of the A string.
You end up with this C-shaped G chord.
[N] The last chord of this section is back
to your B minor [B] on the 2nd fret, that's 2, [Bm] 4, 4, 3, 2 again.
[A] And then the bottom note plays this kind of
[B] melody that [B] goes
[F#] [C#] So you can kind of incorporate that into your [Bm] strumming like this.
[C#] Okay, let's
bring it all the way back to the beginning of that section and play through the whole thing
slowly.
3, [G] 4, [Em]
[Bm] [C#m] [D] [F#m] [Em] [G]
[Bm] [G] [Em]
[Bm] [C#m] [D] [F#m] [Em] [G]
[Bm] [N] something like that.
Okay, after that section the slide guitar solo comes in, and during
that section the rhythm guitar is just playing the chords from the verse.
The last section we have to
cover is that last bridge section with all those big powerful vocal ad-libs and all that.
That
section is going to be just four chords, and the first three are going to be the same three as the
chorus, just with a different rhythm.
So you're going to play two [Em] bars on each chord.
[G]
[G#m] Your last
chord is just going to be your plain [E] old E minor chord.
That's open, [Em] 2, 2, open, open, open.
[E] [A#] And
you're back into that last chorus, and that's how [N] it ends.
Okay, I hope that was helpful to you and
was clear and made sense.
Of course, if you have any questions, feel free to leave them

And then everything else is open.
So 3, 2, open, open, 3, open.
_ _ _ [N] From there, you'll

That top E string

So you'll play index finger [B] on your A string

[Bm] _ _ [E] There we go.
Third chord is your E minor 7.
You're going to play your E minor

to add that 3rd fret B string.
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ [N] So the verse all [G] together sounds like this.
_ _ [Bm] _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ [Bm] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
[Bm] _ _ _ [E] For the chorus,
you're going to play [A#m] an E minor [E] chord, but all the way up here.
Put your index finger

Then _ [E] _ _ [Em] you're
[E] going to play this kind of high register E minor [Em] chord.
[E] _ Next what you're going to [N] do

_ [B] _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ _ Then
you're [B] going to slide [C] that shape [G] down to the [G] 3rd fret, index finger on the 3rd fret,
3, 5, 5, and then your middle finger is going to play [N] the 4th fret on your G [G] string there.
_ Again, those top two strings stay open. _
_ So that chorus rhythm [Em] is going to be this.
_ [G] _
_ _ _ [Em] _ [B] _ [G] _ The last time you're just going to leave, you're just going to play that last chord
one time and let it ring.
Okay, next up things are going to get a bit tricky because [N] this is
the section that has kind of a fingerpicking solo, and what we're going to do is we're going

_ _ _ _ _ [E]
Next you're going to go up to that E minor chord up on the 7th fret
here that we did earlier, but instead of leaving strings open, you're going to bar across, so you're
playing the 7th fret of that top string.
So that goes 7, [Em] 9, 8, 7. _
Take [E] that same shape, slide it [G] all the way

[B] So we've got 2, [Bm] 4, 4, 3, 2.
_ [C#m] Then up two frets, 4, 6, 6, 5, 4.
[E] _ Then you're going to move

_ [G#m] You don't necessarily have to [A] get that top note, it's a bit [N] tricky to get it
when you play it that way.
After that you're going to move all the way up to the 9th fret and go back
to that minor chord shape, [F#m] so 9, 11, 11, 10, 9.
_ [N] _ _ Back [Em] down to the 7th fret and play that E minor chord again. _ _
Then what you're going to do is take your pinky off of the [Fm] G string and move it down to [G] the 10th fret
of the A string.
_ _ _ _ You end up with this C-shaped G chord.
_ [N] The last chord of this section is back
to your B minor [B] on the 2nd fret, that's 2, [Bm] 4, 4, 3, 2 again.
[A] And then the bottom note plays this kind of
[B] melody that [B] goes_
[F#] [C#] So you can kind of incorporate that into your [Bm] strumming like this.
_ _ [C#] Okay, let's
bring it all the way back to the beginning of that section and play through the whole thing
slowly.
3, [G] 4, _ [Em] _
_ [Bm] _ [C#m] _ [D] _ [F#m] _ [Em] _ _ [G] _
_ [Bm] _ _ _ [G] _ _ [Em] _ _
[Bm] _ [C#m] _ [D] _ [F#m] _ [Em] _ _ [G] _ _
[Bm] _ _ _ _ [N] _ something like that.
Okay, after that section the slide guitar solo comes in, and during
that section the rhythm guitar is just playing the chords from the verse.
The last section we have to
cover is that last bridge section with all those big powerful vocal ad-libs and all that.
That

So you're going to play two [Em] bars on each chord.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ _ _ [G#m] Your last
chord is just going to be your plain [E] old E minor chord.
That's open, [Em] 2, 2, open, open, open. _ _
_ _ [E] _ [A#] And
you're back into that last chorus, and that's how [N] it ends.
Okay, I hope that was helpful to you and
was clear and made sense.
Of course, if you have any questions, feel free to leave them
