"We stopped breathing": Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby on Tom Cruise stunts chords
Start Jamming...
[Bb] The world's coming after you.
[D] His fate [Gm] is written.
Shall we write yours too?
[G] If anything happens to them,
there's no place that I won't go to kill you.
That is written.
Hi there, it's Claire Lim here, and this is NME.
I'm here with Vanessa and Pom to talk about all things
Mission Impossible, Dead Reckoning.
So Vanessa, you're back again as the White Widow,
and she is so fun.
Like, I love watching her on screen.
What was your favorite thing about going back in
and playing this role?
Well, I really loved finding, you know,
creating her in the last one because,
I don't know, I just found her so strange,
and I found somebody who sort of has that much
peculiar power to be a kind of unusual energy
and to be really unpredictable.
And, Pom's had this all day, Pom.
No, no, but always what I add is like,
there is like also a kind of like a,
you're like funny also, like at certain moments.
It's really cool [C] because I think
we haven't really seen [Em] the White Widow being funny, you know?
I think you're funnier though.
She's funny even in the middle of like a sort of
a life-threatening [C] car chase, you know,
down the streets of Rome.
No, I'm having fun.
I'm not even funny.
Yeah, she's having fun.
No, but we have fun because you have fun.
Anyway, yeah, so it was just,
Vanessa Redgrave plays my mother in the first movie,
and so I got to just really draw from her and to,
you know, she [Bb] has so much fun with the scenes herself,
and [C] it's kind of smiling, but you think,
like you never quite know whether she's gonna
end up stabbing you at the same time.
So it was fun to sort of try and channel that.
Those are the best characters.
I, [C] yeah, I think [G] so.
I love them.
She definitely was.
And, Pom, so different from Mantis
in Guardians of the Galaxy.
What was your favorite thing about delving into this role
and being completely different?
You were totally badass.
Mm-hmm.
First of all, I wanna introduce this little bag.
That is your bag on camera.
Gilbert!
And I wanna finish the interview by doing,
mwak, mwak, mwak, mwak, mwak!
It's actually so lifelike.
It is, and rubber.
It makes you wanna touch it.
Do a lot of people talk about it?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Jeff Goldblum was a big fan.
Really?
It's got fans worldwide.
There you go.
You can hold it during the interview.
No, it was like so, I can't do the interview
like talking about the character with this.
It's so weird.
Thank you.
No, it was so much fun to get to play
such a different character
and to embrace my inner craziness
and unleash the tiger and do all these action scenes.
Yeah, and I think it's a character
that is a little bit punk, you know?
It's completely different from all the other
female characters from the franchise.
[C] Pretty [E] mysterious, silent, and violent,
[C] and then you see a side [G] of her
that is completely different at the end of the movie.
You talked about the shoebill stork, I think. Yes!
An inspiration, I looked this up,
and whoa, weird-looking bird.
It's such a weird-looking bird, [C] right?
It's a weird-looking bird.
It's a prehistoric bird, and it looks insane,
and I love the way it moves, you know?
It's like super slow, but the [G] stare is crazy.
The eyes of the bird is crazy,
[C] and I thought it was cool to do [A] that
because there's some parts of the movie
I don't [G] speak at all.
I'm just looking, you know?
And also, I spent a lot of time in quarantine by myself,
so I had a lot of time to look at stuff, and I got-
Slowly going mad.
Yes, I was like, crazy, alone,
because it was COVID times.
Googling different kinds of birds.
So I was just looking at these videos,
YouTube videos, for a long time, you know?
What were your, so that leads me to my next question
for both of you.
If you had to choose your spirit animal as actors,
what would your spirit animals be?
Honestly, it's always [C] really been the panther.
It's the panther, and it's [G] also like the character
that you, you know, for the Cardi commercial that you did.
Which is weird, which is weird,
because I have panthers around in my home.
I think that was a bit mysterious.
It's a bit like when you had Mission Impossible.
Yes, you manifested the panther.
It [C] was bizarrely, do you know what it is?
It's because [G] they're just so, oh my goodness,
when I feel so timid or, you know, doubtful,
I just, that would be the thing that I'd want to channel.
Most of the time, I'm here with the rabbits,
so I'm a bit more like a rabbit in my real life.
A rabbit [Cm] in your real life?
Yeah, so I try and like frantically channel them.
You're kind of like, you're so [G] powerful,
and you know, that the panther really goes
with the character, and the elegance, too.
Yeah, I would say so, yeah.
I'm here with the pig,
so I don't know what that says about me.
Yep, yep.
I'm here with the tiger.
Pigs are really kind, and the loveliest.
You have tigers.
Tigers are-
Tiger is cool.
Tiger [Am] works for the character,
but also the shoebill, [A] or the shoebilled sport.
Was that your spirit animal for this that was?
Yes.
But what about generally?
Oh, [G] generally, tiger.
But also, it's like one of the meanings of my name, Pom.
Ah, okay.
Mm-hmm, it means tiger, [A] too.
What are the most insane things
that you have witnessed working with Tom?
I mean, I think we saw him do the motorcycle cliff jump,
like this.
Yeah, that, actually, that.
In real life.
Real life, in that.
This, in real life.
Can you imagine seeing a man do that in real life?
Over there, watching.
And he did it like seven times,
or eight times in a row in front of us.
It was mind [Am]-blowing.
Oh my God, were your [C] stomachs and your mouth watching?
I always say [E] everyone else was so nervous [Em] and fearful,
and he wasn't.
And he just sort of stood up the other way [D] around.
Yeah, we stopped [E] breathing when he was jumping,
and then someone would yell,
"'Canopy!'
when the parachute opens."
And we would all cheer and applaud.
And then he would do it again.
[C] I wanted to ask you,
what bands or albums [Em] that you were listening to
when you were filming Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning?
You had the theme tune in [E] your head
before you went and did some [Bm] stunts.
Yeah, I mean, it depends.
[D] Yeah, yeah, I would do that.
Like, right before the take, I would [G] hum,
do, do, do, [Am] do, do, do, do.
Because what she was doing was so cool.
Also, I have a good list for [E] running,
and for running [B] fast,
because you would do interval training,
and run super fast.
And there's a [Am] playlist called,
Run Like a [G] Dinosaur Is Running [C] After You.
I mean, it's my own playlist.
I called it that way.
I need that.
Yes, I should send it to you.
And there's some stuff like [A] Savage,
or WAP,
[Em] or some [C] songs that, like, ah, you know?
Well, thank [G] you very much [Em] for chatting to me.
I really hope it goes well.
It's a really fun film.
So thank you very, very much,
and I hope you have a good day.
Thank you, Dan.
Thank you, you too.
[C] Bye.
