[E] Richard Held, you did a very nice introduction to the work of your friend Christopher Wu
[F] in one of the most beautiful museums and one [E] of the most [N] important museums in Germany,
the Ludwig Museum in Cologne.
And it's definitely not the CBGBs.
So when you remember when you went to New York City [F] in your early 20s,
did you have any [E] idea how your life could be [Db] the next 20 or 30 years?
[E]
No, I didn't.
I came to New York as a teenager.
[F] I dropped out of high school [C] and moved to New York to be a writer.
I wanted to be a [E] poet.
And [G] then pretty soon I became a [N] musician.
And here I am [Em] giving a lecture as if I'm an art scholar.
But it's interesting.
It's an adventure.
I mean, I do sometimes feel [Eb] like I'm [C] a character in a novel or something.
It's not like a – [E] it doesn't feel –
I feel [Db] like I'm watching myself from [C] some corner of the room
because the identities keep changing.
It's kind of like this existential [Dbm] confusion.
[F] The cover of The Black Generation is one of the most iconic covers ever made.
[Em] And you were pretty close to being the poster boy of [N] the punk rock scene,
especially with that fashion, that music you created even before it has a name.
Do you miss something like success?
Do you have the feeling that other people made more out of what you see?
No.
I mean, I really feel like the music I made was about failure.
[Gb] If you succeeded, [N] you weren't really true to yourself.
You worked as a musician until the beginning of the 80s.
You're working as a writer.
Do you need all these aspects of artistic life?
[C] Well, you know, I just try to [F]
stay [C] interested.
I mean, I'm [Eb] [E] just messing around, [Bbm] trying [E] to [N] keep busy and stay interested in things.
I have this – for me, it's just a weird weakness of mine,
is that if I find any activity interesting, I want [C] to try doing it myself.
[Fm] I can't [Eb] appreciate it [Ebm] without wanting to do it.
[Ab] It's just – I [N] don't know why that is, but I just go with it.
Okay.
