[Am] [E] Hello everyone, Paul Hummeler at Dream Guitars, and here's one from just up the Highway 26 in Kingsport, Tennessee
where the wonderful builder Gerald Shepherd lives.
Gerald's an old friend of ours, and we've been dealing his guitars for quite a while, and this is a really nice one.
This is an Ave Maria Grand Concert guitar.
The Ave Maria has to do with the appointments on the instrument, and it's further upgraded as well.
I believe this one was either he either made it for a show or was custom ordered with some special features
which is pretty fancy.
All right, so the first of all, let's start with the Swiss spruce top.
Swiss spruce, again, all the spruces from the Alps that grow very high up, very tight grain, really [C] lovely sound.
I like Swiss on Kevin Ryan guitars,
and I'm hearing sort of the same thing on this guitar where it's a lot of sparkle and shimmer on the top.
[E] Then you've got a few cool features like a little bevel here on the cutaway area, so when you come up and play,
it's rounded here.
There's a armrest bevel here, a
side port for the right ear, which is kind of cool.
Sometimes you'll see them here a lot,
but I kind of like this spot as well.
Of course the cutaway itself, and then this beautiful, really nice old Brazilian [G] rosewood.
Really nice and dark, and it's got a little bit of just enough color difference to be
dramatic, like the side here.
Look at this [Abm] almost two-tone natural effect, which I just love.
And then of course you've got a full abalone top border.
There's an abalone back strip, and there's an abalone around [E] the tail wedge too, and then the Shepherd [N] S on the headstock.
Gorgeous guitar.
Holds real comfortable with the curve of the bevel here.
You don't get that red line in your forearm, and everything about Gerald's setup is wonderful.
This [Abm] one's just fun to play, so let's have a little listen to it.
I'll play you something in standard tuning.
This is the Gerald Shepherd Ave Maria Grand [D] Concert, and this one is from 2015.
So just a few years old.
Just old enough to really be [Eb] alive, so [Am] let's have some fun.
