Start Jamming...
[Cm] How much money you got?
A lot.
How many problems you got?
A lot.
How many people done died?
In December 2018, 21 Savage dropped his sophomore studio album,
I Am Greater Than I Was, and opened the project with his thoughtful track,
A Lot.
How much money you got?
A lot.
How many problems you got?
A lot.
How many people done died?
A lot.
Left you [G] out to rot?
A lot.
The song was produced by DJ Dahe and features a sample from the 1971 track,
I Love You by East of Underground, an obscure funk band that was made up of active duty
soldiers in the U.S. military.
[N] [C]
[Cm] How much money you [Bb] got?
A lot.
How much money you got?
A lot.
21 gets emotional on the track, and at one point speaks about the death of someone close to him.
My [Cm] brother lost his life and it turned me to a beast.
My brother got life and it turned me to the streets.
He broke down this line and what it means for him to go back to Decatur, Georgia where
it happened in an interview with Genius' own Rob Markman.
So it's like I done lost a lot of people out here.
I done made a lot of money out here.
This little script really turned me to a man.
On the song, 21 also mentions getting shot six times, which he's spoken about in the past.
How many times you got shot?
A lot.
How many niggas you shot?
A lot.
When you getting shot, it ain't like, feel it.
It's more like you watching it happen to you.
It's like my soul came out of my body and I was watching myself get hit.
Next, J.
Cole makes a surprise appearance.
I just [Dm] came from the A.I. drove back home.
Six hour drive.
[Cm] Six and a half.
Before I left, I stopped by and seen my nigga 21 in the studio.
And apparently, he really did drive six and a half hours to record.
It was random.
I didn't know he was coming.
He just hit me like, what studio you at?
He took the song with him, drove all the way back to Raleigh.
It was like three in the morning, he drove all the way back to Raleigh and did the song.
On Cole's verse, he mentions Tekashi 6ix9ine's arrest on federal racketeering and firearm charges back in November 2018.
Cole's been vocal about what he thinks about the new school of hip-hop, and in May 2018,
spoke on Tekashi's rising popularity.
The 6ix9ine kid, he's willing to do whatever, say whatever, because he wants it that bad.
And in a way, I'm like, you gotta kinda respect it because he knows what he's doing.
Cole shouts out two NBA players on his verse.
First is Markel Folt of the Philadelphia 76ers, who was recently injured.
And then Dennis Smith Jr.,
a point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, who is also a native
of Cole's hometown, Fayetteville, North Carolina.
[Bb]
And
[Eb] while many fans were pleasantly surprised about Cole's feature, 21 had plenty of others,
including Young Miami, Gunna, and even Project Pat.
But none of these names are actually included on the album's track list.
You gotta play my shit top to bottom.
I got a lot of niggas on there that you ain't gonna expect.
You just gotta listen and see.
On the physical copy of the album, fans heard a different version of the song, and 21's
manager took to Twitter to confirm it.
Since the album's release in late December, a lot climbed to the top of the Genius song
chart and stayed there.
