30 Hot Rod Guitar Licks - #8 Popcorn - Bill Kirchen chords
Start Jamming...
Lick number eight, Popcorn.
This is a kind of a novelty thing that I came up with by accident
and I think it perhaps is my only totally original contribution to the literature of guitar.
Let's have a listen.
[C] [Gm]
[C] [G]
[C] [Gm]
[C] [G] [C]
[Gm] Let's break down this popcorn lick [Em] here.
To make the popping noise, which is
[F]
I'll show you how that goes.
You gotta use your bare hands.
You've gotta have an electric and it should be in the bridge position.
What you're doing is you're really playing a damped false harmonic.
You're dampening, [C] say in this case, [E] the A string [Bb]
[Em] with the knuckle of your thumb.
So the knuckle of your thumb is resting on the A string.
Now, reach behind your thumb.
Your thumb is resting on the [C] D string.
Reach behind it and pluck that string with your index finger.
And if you move it up and down, you'll hear that it is a harmonic, that the note changes.
Get it where you like it, someplace, in my case, between the two pickups.
And the lick goes like this.
[Cm] You play the A string or whatever string back behind the thumb with your index finger.
Then your thumb is on the next string up, [Bb] the D string in this case.
And you're [C] cocked on that string and you play that string.
So in context, it sounds
[G]
[C] If you turn up the treble like I just did, it makes the thing pop out better.
So here's the lick.
I started out with a slide up to
and we're in the C position.
A fret, Louis, [Bb] Louis, bar, or Louie, Louie, depending on what part of the country you live in.
[C] So it's
[C]
[G] [C]
[Gm] [C] Now
There's the pop.
Pop.
The best thing to do is just grab hold of an electric and mess around until you can get that noise to come out.
So I'm not going to dwell on that too long, but I'll show you the nuts and bolts of the melody.
And I'm stretching.
I'm stretching that [Eb] minor third until it's most of the way up [C] to a major third.
[A] [C]
Same lick now.
Now the third part.
[Bb] Now for the end we [F] go
[Eb]
And we use the chicken picking you get when you hit both sides of a string with a bare thumb and finger.
And it both plays the string and dampens it.
[Gb] [F] [Eb]
So all put together, it's
[Cm] [C]
That also
That's the same stretch.
An octave lower where you're at the minor third, but you worry it up towards the major third.
[F]
[A] There you go.
