_ _ [G] _ _ Hey everybody, Scott Goldbaum [C] from Fender Play here.
The first year is such [B] an important time in learning guitar,
but it can be overwhelming at times.
There's so much [E] content that we can get lost in,
running the risk of missing the simple things
that will set us up for success.
Now today we're gonna run [Eb] through five tips
every new player needs.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Fender Play,
it's the best online resource for learning the guitar,
bass, [B] and ukulele.
We have paths to suit every player's [Abm] needs
and over 3,500 lessons to help you reach your goals.
You can sign up for a seven day free trial right now.
All right, onto these tips.
The first tip I wanna give you is consistency.
Every little bit goes a long way.
You don't have to practice guitar for 24 hours a day
in order to improve.
In fact, focused playing for just 10 to 20 minutes daily
is gonna yield remarkable results.
So committing to your guitar,
remember that's [G] a moment to commit to [A] yourself.
And if you stay [F] consistent,
you're going to improve faster than you believe.
So make sure you're picking up your guitar
in any amount of time every day.
All right, tip two, patience.
Playing guitar can be difficult at times.
You're gonna have some plateaus
where it seems you just can't nail something
and that's totally normal, welcome to the club.
However, you're also gonna have breakthroughs
where it all comes together out of nowhere.
[E] Well that breakthrough didn't come out of nowhere,
you did it.
The trick is to stay [F] patient enough
to make it [E] through the breakthrough
and reflect on [Eb] the progress you're making.
All right, the third tip, listening.
Finding inspiration away from your [Em] instrument
will improve your connection to the instrument.
[N] Be honest with yourself, listen to the music you love
and it's going to inform
what you wanna learn on the guitar.
There are also resources like interviews,
books and articles that offer you insight
into what inspired your favorite guitarist.
It's easy to get lost in the details when learning
so remember to listen and stay [Abm] inspired.
Definitely check out Fender Play Live on Wednesdays.
You can check that out [F] on our Fender YouTube page
or our Fender Facebook page.
Amazing host, incredible guests who are coming on
as accomplished [E] artists, guest instructors,
giving you their [Ab] insight from the studio,
from the [Ab] road, from the lessons they tend to [G] teach.
And it's a real supportive place to learn a lot of stuff
[B] every Wednesday at 5 p.m. Pacific time.
All right, the fourth tip I wanna give you is the community.
You know, having a community is gonna promote support.
We can create communal relationships
by sharing the music we're listening to and love,
playing techniques that we're working on
for [Gb] someone to give constructive feedback,
learning new songs with a friend
and jamming on songs with others
to eventually start your own band.
You know, this might seem frightening in just the first year
however, remember there are plenty of people
who are also in their first year
that you're gonna find yourself relating to.
And the best people to learn are from those
who actually know more than you.
So don't be afraid of challenging yourself
to take that [Abm] step in that direction.
Now the fifth and final tip is to have fun.
Guys, the most important thing to remember
is [E] that playing guitar should be fun
[G] and that's applied to any instrument for that matter.
It's called playing after all.
Don't take yourself too serious [E] and stress.
You're going to improve over time.
Just try to [Abm] find the humor in sounding bad
from time to time when you practice
because that's what practicing is for.
Now we never sound our best
when we're first learning something new.
So just be sure to share your enthusiasm
with friends and musical colleagues along the way
and enjoy the ride.
So [Db] you might have expected [Dbm] to see
[E] some scale pattern technique
or that a capo allows you to play three chords in 12 keys.
But the truth is that all that stuff reveals itself in time.
These are just some [Abm] tips
that developed over 20 years of playing an instrument
and [E] truthfully these are tips
that keep me playing my instrument.
If you remind yourself of these [B] five tips,
you're going to improve your guitar playing,
you're gonna create [Ab] musical friendships
and you're gonna have a lot more fun along the way.
Remember, Fender Play tracks your progress for you
and lets you know when you're on a streak,
making it the perfect tool to help you learn
and stay [Gb] motivated.
Also be sure to check out the Fender Play Facebook community
where you can connect with new and experienced players
while [Abm] getting questions answered
from our expert Fender Play instructors as well.
Hope you found some of these [G] tips helpful
and hope to see you for more down the road. _
