50 Bass Grooves - #17 Funk Off - Bass Guitar Lesson - David Santos chords
Start Jamming...
Baseline number 17, Funk Off.
You stay down low on this one, down at your first fret there.
So you're in first position, and you're just going to get really in the pocket
and play a simple line that's not so simple.
It's got an approach note, a pickup, and it's got a lot of low [C] Fs in it
that are real funky, and a couple of fills.
You can utilize blues scale fills on this one.
I'm going to play it for you now.
[F]
[Bb] [F]
[C]
[F] [C] [F]
Baseline number 17, Funk Off.
[Cm]
[Eb] This groove is a one-chord vamp that starts with a 16th note
as a pickup to the downbeat of the main basic riff.
[F] So it's
right?
You've got to be able to grab a 16th note out of the thin air.
Two, three, four, and
So that's called a pickup, and we need to have those pickups in our playing,
be able to approach a measure by a 16th note.
So practice that.
That's really cool.
And try and nail it right on a 16th note.
It's the basic pickup to the main riff.
And the basic riff starts on a high F and drops to the low F.
This is a very, very difficult groove.
I had to play this one four or five times
before I felt like I had it in the pocket,
because you've got to get that right in there, man.
Those notes, those rhythms, that pocket,
you've got to just lock into it and play it solid.
The right hand has a nice workout, too, on these rhythms
between the high D [N] string and the low E string
if you want to get them tight and clean and funky, which you will.
And the fills are built around the blues scale
using some slides and some hammer-ons,
and that adds to the funk.
[Ab] I'll show you what I mean.
[Gb] That's a little trill [F] I like to use a lot, as you can tell.
And stuff like [A] that.
[Ab]
[Bb] It's the blues scale.
[Ab] [F] So the basic riff
Now, it's got some rhythms that you really need to lock down and understand.
The first one is that pickup, as I said.
Then there's a big, fat eighth note down-up.
We're into a 16th-note pocket, a lot of this groove.
But that first eighth note is really bad, as in good.
Three, four.
There's a straight [B] eighth.
And then you get into the 16th [F]-note stuff.
That takes a long time to get that together.
That's some really deep groove kind of thinking,
to play those kind of rhythms.
Then I kind of tap my bass and stuff.
In the studio, that's kind of come through,
so you don't want to do a lot of that.
[C] You can, but you can try and hit them [F] without that.
But it doesn't feel as good.
I like to hit the bass.
Then [Ab] a fill.
[F]
