Hi everyone, this is Rick at Tasty Guitar.
Today we're going to be focusing on some great R&B rhythm guitar fills.
Now these are really essential when playing old Motown, soul, ballads.
These are great stuff to have in your arsenal.
Especially if you're in a situation where you might be playing with another guitar player
or a keyboard player and you don't want to just be playing the same exact arpeggio or
chord pattern that they are.
You can throw these in and add some color in the right spots.
They're really effective.
Okay, these are going to be all in the key of C.
[Bb] And let's get started.
[C]
Alright now this first lick is something really common.
You'll hear this in a lot of old school tunes.
It's commonly used going from the [F] 1 to the 4 [C] back to the 1.
In our case here we're going to play this in C.
From the C [F] to the F [C] back to the C.
Okay, very easy lick.
Just a couple little hammer-ons.
It's all about where you place it.
Okay, so I'm going to play the chords here and you'll hear where to put it.
There's our C [F] back to the F.
[C]
So you can lead back to the [F] C.
[C]
Alright, [F]
[C]
[F]
[C] now another place you'll hear this lick a lot is going from the 1 chord to the 6 chord.
Okay, so in the key of C we're talking about C down to A minor.
Alright, so I'm going to play the changes and we'll see where we can put it there.
Okay
[Am]
[C]
[Am]
[C]
[Am]
[C]
now the second lick is also something that works really well over both the 1 to
the 4 and the 1 to the 6.
And you can put it in a lot of different situations.
Here's how this one goes.
[F] [C] [Dm]
[C]
[F]
[C]
[F]
[C]
Okay, the third lick today is based off of the A minor 7 chord, the 6 chord in the key of C.
And we're going to take it off the shape of a minor 7 chord based with the root on the 5th string.
In this case the root way up here on the 12th fret.
Okay, it's a very easy lick.
Just a little bit of a hammer on [Dm] and [C] a little slide.
[D] [C] And this works great [Am] over a minor 7 chord.
Of course it's also movable.
[Dm] So if you want to play it in, say, D, right there,
just find your D minor 7 chord shape on the 5th string.
[G] [F] There you have it.
[Gm] [F] [Em] There's E.
[G]
Okay, so now let's see what this sounds like over the A [Am] minor 7 chord.
[C]
[Am]
[Dm] [Am]
[C] Okay, [Am]
[D]
this next lick would work real well over a static [C] 1 chord in, say, like a 6-8 ballad.
Very easy.
It's [Em] based on the [C] 6th intervals.
And let's see how this one goes.
Okay, this next lick is very similar to the one we did before.
It's pretty much the same sound except we're going to be using intervals of thirds.
[Dm] [G] [Ab] [Dm]
[Em] You can use it also, it works great over a ballad, a 6-8 ballad.
But it's a very versatile kind of lick.
Let's hear what it sounds [C] like.
Okay,
[Am] [C] for the final lick [G] today, this [Am] one works really well from a 6 chord back to the 1 [C] chord.
So if we were going from [Am] our A minor to our C, check this out.
[C]
[G] [Am]
[C]
Very simple.
[G] You'll hear this in a [Am] lot of tunes.
[C]
[G] [Am]
Alright, [C]
[G] [Am] from here on, I'm just going to play kind of a combination [C] of all the licks we learned today.
[G] [Am]
