Hey, what's up y'all?
This is Daquan Bowens with daquanbowens.com, here to help musicians take their playing
to the next level.
And today I want to show you guys the 6-7-1 chord progression [F] at the end of the song I just played.
The song I played was Blessings of Abraham by Donald Lawrence, just in case you were wondering.
Here's the move.
[G] [C] Okay?
All right, we were in C.
[D] [A] [C]
If you are familiar with the scale, the sixth of the scale, the
sixth of the scale is a minor chord, [Am] okay?
The 6, which is A and C, right?
And the 7 is diminished.
[B] But a more [C] modern way to play the 6 is to play an Fsus2 and then add the 6, which [A] is
A, in the [F] bass.
And this creates a Fadd9 chord, [C]
right?
The F is the 4 [Am] of C.
[A]
The 6 in the bass makes it sound like a minor [C] 6 chord, somewhat.
And now if we take this voicing and move it up a whole [Bm] step, we'll play the 5 chord, [G] or
the 7 chord, however you look at it.
But the [D] chord is a Gsus2, and if we [B] add the 3rd in the bass, it becomes [G] a Gadd9.
Okay?
[E] And the melody line [B] to connect it is 6-7-1, or A-B-C.
[C]
All right?
And [F] I like to use the first finger, the [C] second finger, and the fifth finger.
On my left hand, I just use whatever finger is comfortable.
I like to use the middle finger.
All right?
[F] Then with my pinky, I like to move it up while I'm playing the chord.
[G]
Okay?
[D] [E]
All right?
So I'm playing it when the top note is [D] C-D-E, and then go [G] back down to D at the top, and
that sets me up for the next chord.
And then the last, [C] the melody line to bring me to the 1 is [B] C [C]-B-C.
All right?
And the melody for the chord is
[Am]
[G] [C] [F]
[C] There we go.
[A]
[G] [A]
[D] [Gb] [E]
[G] [D] [F] [G]
[D] That's the move.
I hope you guys enjoyed the move.
