[G] I know a [C] little song
[G]
It's taking away my love
Shed a tear
Keith and Jimmy Goodrell worked together in a band years ago
called The Country Storer.
He'd been with Ralph about long enough this second time around
and was getting itchy.
I left you this morning
[C] And she left [G] me faded
Now I'm a-rockin' around the
He didn't think a lateral move to another bluegrass band
was what he really wanted to do
if indeed he was going to make any kind of a change at all.
It's taking away my love
And [Am] I always [Em] knew he liked country.
Every time [D] he'd come on [G] our camper
we'd get there and he'd sing
[C] songs, George Jones, Merle Ager, Blitz, you know.
Of course, that's what [F] I like too, so.
[C] My pitch was that Crow had already used a steel guitar and [Am] drums
on his previous album, You Can Share My Blanket.
[E] And he would be [Am] looking at an opportunity
[F] to record with these instruments on [C] the next [G] project as well.
[C] That seemed to get his attention.
[E] [F] So, he did quit and I think
[G] in fact we were on the [Bb] same show
[C] [Dm] [C] somewhere in Maryland, I think.
I do not remember [F] where it was.
[C] But there [D] was a bunch of acts [G] on the [E] show.
We were [C] there, Ralph Stanton was there.
And that was Keith's last show with Ralph.
[Eb] [Bb] And he rode back, when we came back home,
we left at night and Keith rode back [C] with us.
[Gm] So, that's how Keith came to be in the New South.
[Eb] I leave here [Bb] today
I leave in [F] a [Cm] hurry
[F] Probably is [Bb] one of the finest singers [F] I've ever [Bb] listened to.
He was [Cm] unique.
[Bb] He was a singer's singer.
[F]
I've always thought that J.D. gave him that.
He gave him the [Eb] reach to reach that [Bb] star
when he OK'd the Somewhere Between album.
That was [Cm] probably [Bb] the thing
[Eb]
that helped [Dm] him get his contract [Cm]
with RCA at the [Bb] time.
And there again, I knew what [Eb] was going to happen.
[Dm] [Cm] [Bb]
I hated to lose him as a lead singer,
but I knew where he belonged.
And if I could be of any help to do that,
then that's what I wanted to do.
[A]
Keith was so well respected as a singer,
even when he was in bluegrass,
that we would go to [Bm] Nashville
[E] and [A] lots of times it was The Who's Who
was in the recording studio listening to him sing.
I mean, sometimes it would be surprising
who'd walk in to listen to him record.
[B] I was [Gbm] always aware [Dbm]
[B] of Keith's problems.
[E] I knew that going in.
But there again, I [A] thought, well, maybe this would help him.
He got to a [E] place that he wanted to be
and people really cared about him.
[B] [Gb]
[B] And Lord knows I did,
and [E] told everybody in the band.
And I [A] knew he had a problem.
Of [Gbm] [E]
course we did all we could, but it didn't work.
You [B] know, the good Lord works in mysterious [E] ways,
and it just wasn't to happen.
It just didn't happen.
But he had the talent.
[B]
[E]
He had the talent.
