[B] My [F#] [E]
[A] first musical influence
was the Beatles.
I couldn't [G] believe the Beatles.
My [E] dad had a beaten up old Spanish guitar
[C] [G] in the attic, which he had learned a few chords on
when he was a student.
And this had been sitting there, [E] I didn't know about this,
I was 11 or 12.
[Em] And he went up and got it for me
and showed me a couple of chords.
[G] And I distinctly [D] remember
holding this thing up
without a strap, standing in front of this full-length mirror
[A] thinking,
[D] I want to be John Lennon.
That was [C#] it.
I started off [E] as a child actor.
I got a part in [C#] a Tony Hancock film,
The Punch and Judy Man.
This was quite an experience.
I realized that I loved the theater,
I loved entertainment anyway,
but I didn't want to be an actor.
I wanted more to be a musician.

[C] The first [Em] instrument I picked up
was actually [A] a ukulele.
I actually wanted a guitar,
[D] but I think that my parents [A] wanted to see how serious I was about it.
So at the age [D] of eight,
they bought [A] me a plastic,
[C#] Tommy Steele [E] ukulele.
And then I remember,
[C#] when I was 12,
that Christmas I [A] got my third.
[G#m] The kind of music I was playing
at that time was [E] very much
getting a songbook and trying to work out
the chords of [A] Beatles songs
or songs by
the Rolling Stones or the [D] Foremost
or the Searchers [E] or the Shadows.
And you could go down to
[A] Denmark Street in the West End,
go into the shop with your pocket money,
get that piece of [G] sheet music and take it home.
And I [E] used to give you little pictures
of what the chords should be,
and I remember sitting there trying to work them out.
It was great.
