[Ab] G'day guys, my name's Dave and welcome to another Guitar Hero song tutorial.
And Ed Sheeran is back, hallelujah!
In this lesson I'll be teaching you how to play Afterglow.
Now for the basics of this song you'll need your guitar on standard tuning and you will
need a capo on the 4th fret of your guitar.
If you're wondering why Ed Sheeran uses a capo on the 6th fret of his guitar in the
video, it's because he's probably got his guitar tuned to D standard and then he's
using his capo on the 6th fret.
But in standard tuning you'll just need your capo on the 4th fret of your guitar.
Now if you want to master your chords back to front then be sure to head over to Guitarsheroadyhero.com

Let's jump into the lesson.
Alright, so let's start with the strumming pattern and this strumming pattern will be
used throughout the whole song.
So let's learn this first and then we can apply it to all the chords.
So the strumming pattern is really nice and easy.
There's just 8 down strums followed by a quick up strum.
So it's 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
Now one thing we want to add to make this strumming pattern sound really good is accents
on the right strums.
So you want to accent the 1 beat, the end beat after the 2 and the 4 beat.
So that will sound like this.
[Gb] 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
[Ab] Now what an accent means is that you're just going to play that strum a little bit harder
than the rest.
So if I'm playing a G chord for example, on the accents I'll strum more of the strings
and on the non-accented strums [B] I'll just strum a couple of the top bass notes.
So it'll sound like this.
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
So now that we've got the strumming pattern down let's move to [Bm] the chord progressions
and it's really nice and easy.
For our verse we have 2 lines of chords.
We're going [B] to start with a G chord.
Now we're going to play that [Eb] for 2 strumming patterns and then we're going to go to a [G] C sus 2.
So that's really easy.
We're just dropping our middle finger down 1 string onto the 3rd fret of the 5th string.
And you want to keep the 6th string muted [Gb] as well.
You're just [Gb] strumming from the 5th string onwards.
Ideally you'll want to have that 4th and 3rd string [B] open.
So that's C sus 2.
That's played for 2 strumming patterns.
And then we go to a D sus 4.
So you're keeping your ring [C] and pinky finger where they are and putting your index finger
on the 2nd fret of [Gb] the 3rd string.
And for this chord we're just strumming from the 4th string onwards.
And to ensure that [Ab] you're muting the 6th string you can just lightly touch that string with
your [Gb] free middle finger.
Like that.
So that's played for 1 strumming pattern.
Then we go to an [A] E minor 7.
So keep your ring and pinky finger where they are.
Index and middle go on the 2nd [Gb] frets of the 5th and 4th [Abm] string.
So that's E minor 7.
And then we go back to C sus 2 for 2 strumming patterns.
[A] So that's it for the verse and [F] it'll sound like this in total.
[B]
[B]

[Bb] That's it for the verse and next [Fm] we get to the chorus.
Now the first chorus has 2 lines of chords.
We're going to start with a C sus [B] 2 for 2 strumming patterns.
[B] And we go to our G and then [Gb] D sus 4 for 1 strumming pattern.
That first line of chords sounds like this.
[B]
[Gbm]
Now that first line of chords is played through 5 times for the first chorus.
[G] And for the second line of chords instead of the D sus 2 at the end we're just continuing
on with the G for 2 strumming patterns.
So [Bm] the final line of chords for the first chorus.
[B]
[B]
And for the second chorus it's even easier.
We're just playing that first line of chords all the way through.
And that's it for this song.
Really [F] nice and simple but sounds amazing.
Be sure to really focus on the basics [G] first.
The strumming pattern is going to be the most important thing in this song for you to get it right.
So just practicing those accents.
The 1 and [Ab] 2 and 3 and 4 and.
And just practicing that over and over again and then applying it to all the chord shapes.
So now I'll be doing a full playthrough of the song and I'll have my good friend Tugler
lending his awesome vocals to this playthrough.
If you want to check out his cover of this song I'll leave a link to that in the description below.
Feel free to play this back as many times as you'd like to to practice, play along to
