friend of mine and a good pal and a good chum and you might know him from such classic films
Robin Hood
that's a classic
I think I mean we did have a small boat
I mean were you um [F#] were you in that film?
I was again
I mean there were other characters in [Fm] that film there's no doubt about it
[A] for me the central [N] part of that film
was the one with Lance
I'm for radio listeners
if you look carefully if you look carefully in his eyes you can read in his eyes he's saying
holy shit that's Kate Blandon
you killed some dudes
there's a scene in there one of the only scenes I did with Kate
what do you think Kate?
oh you love Kate
yeah
anyway it was good fun what a great experience the whole thing was
[F#] you killed some dudes
[G] it was a [N] great time we did this scene where Kate and the marionette and Robin would ride in on
horses and the marionette guys are in the they're in this sort of uh like a wash station you know
we got like a half naked shirts on we're all washing ourselves because we've been on the
booze and that the night before and shagged a big pile of women and all this kind of stuff
and Marion rides in and she says like don't send things to us and rides away
and it was like cut and I stood up and went I just did a topless scene with Kate Blanton
the boy from Penny Harbor
I [C#]
[G] really hope she doesn't listen to CBC
[F#] [G] we were in [E] Australia and shagged
anyway I wrote a bunch of songs with [G#] Russell's over the years
[G] this one was one of the well it's not the first one we wrote but it's the first one we wrote in
[D] Newfoundland and he came to Newfoundland about five or six years [F#] ago now we had a little party
out on the back deck [N] and um it was a big party actually it was his in Toronto the whole time
previous to that shooting Cinderella [D] Man and so he spent a lot of time in Canada and
he came to Newfoundland and I think one of the [D#] words in his mind he said
I've [G] just been somewhere different like I feel like [N] I've left one country and come to another
like that was you know and of course like Kim spoke of earlier the whole process of leaving
it's been a long story one in song and stories and folklore in Newfoundland we feel like we've
been exporting people for years and I you know I sort of try to fill Russell and Mal my friends
in about the history of the place and talking about Joey Smallwood and about how my grandfather
until he died about 700 years ago he used to say I don't know what are you doing you're going off
to Canada I go like I didn't have the heart to say it I didn't really have the heart to tell him
I mean that comes off the same in the same conversation I'll be talking to my grandmother
who'll be in the same house she'll say Alan honey still playing in the band
I'd say yeah not working
[F#]
such is the life in the strange and wonderful [G#] place that we're all from
um so we [A] wrote this tune about uh you know about the [F#] long history of people leaving
and uh [N] trying to make your way home I suppose this is called where I belong
and Jenny said goodbye this afternoon as far as I can [B] tell she [N] can't bear the goodbye evenings
the morning after a farewell she says here you are another one to [G] who's back I'm saying cheers
it's like a death in the family and it's been going on for years
so I'll cast my leaving shadow and [B] I'll be Canadian but distance won't [F] decide what matters
[N] to the hard rocks loving son and when I'm thinking of St.
John's I'll bring her closer with this song
I don't know where I'm going but I know where I belong don't get the old man started or I'll
have to hide him from the wrong if you can keep his mind from 49 will he'll keep having fun
oh it's not the kids he's cursing though I'm his third to leave he's mad at Mr.
Smallwood
and it's a parent's right to grieve so I'll cast my leaving shadow and I'll be Canadian
but distance won't decide what matters to the hard rocks loving son and when I'm thinking of
St.
John's I'll bring her closer with this song I don't know where I'm going but I know where I
belong so let's take a moment's silence for our dear departed souls and let's fly our flags
and have their nest as another young man goes the laughter of the children supplanted by the
ghosts and another tide surrenders to a foreign
who beat the path from our front door one right after the other they won't be back up
she whispered in my ear is being the last flower in the garden with no [B] one left to care
[N] so I'll cast my leaving shadow and I'll be Canadian but distance won't decide what matters
to the hard rocks loving son and when I'm thinking of St.
John's I'll bring her closer with this song
[D#] I don't know where I'm going but I [D] know where I [F#] belong where I belong
I don't [B] know where [F#] I'm going but I know
