[F#] This is the [A] guitar lesson for I Stay Away by Alice in Chains from Guitar Made Easy.com.
The tuning for [C#] this one is Db, [G#] Ab, [F#] Db, Gb, [D#m] Bb, Eb.
So everything is a half step down and then this is actually going to be a Db so it's
another half step down.
[N] Four parts to this song, really not a hard song, you just gotta practice it.
The first part is the intro which goes like [C#] this.
[F#] [C#]
What I was doing there was I was taking my pointer finger, barring it over the [D#] second
fret so it hits the [G#] D, the G, and the B string.
And then I take my middle finger and I put that on the third fret on the B string.
So you should have a chord that kind of sounds like that.
[F#] Now what we're going to do is we're going to hammer on with our ring finger onto the
fourth fret on the D [C#] string.
So down, hammer, down, up, down, up.
Down, hammer, down, up, down, up.
That's the first [G#] part.
Now we're going to make [B] kind of a funny little chord right here.
We're going to bar our pointer finger on the third fret on the B and the E string.
You can also do the G string if you want as well, it doesn't really matter because we're
going to have another finger in front of it.
And we take our ring finger and put that on the G string at the fifth fret.
But we're going to strum the D string all the [F#] way through the E string.
Okay?
We hold it, we let it ring, and then we do a little walk down which is going to start
on the third fret on the A string.
It goes A, D, G.
Put our pointer finger on the second fret on the A [A#] string.
[F#] A, D, G.
Now, you can use your ring finger or your pinky.
Hit the [B] fifth fret on this D flat [F#] string.
So [C#] D flat, A, E.
D flat, A, E.
And then we go [F#]
D flat on the fifth fret.
[F] D flat on the fourth fret.
[G#] And then we go both the D flat and the A string at the same time twice.
[E] All together, once again, it [C#] should sound like this very slowly.
[G#]
[F#] [C#]
[G#] [N] That's the intro.
You play through that four times and then you move on to the verse.
Now, how I play the verse here is like this.
It's very similar to the intro.
It's actually an easier version of the intro.
[D#] It goes like this.
[F#] [C#]
[A] What I was doing there was first I make a D chord.
And what I'm doing is I'm hammering on into that D chord.
So I'm keeping only my ring finger on the third [D#] fret B string.
And as [G#] I strum, I hammer [Dm] into it.
But then I hammer on the other fingers into it.
[C#] So watch.
[C#] Hear that?
So down strum, then I hammer.
And then down, up, down, up.
And then I do a Cadd9 chord.
So that's going to be middle finger on the third fret A string,
pointer finger on the second fret D string.
Then we have our ring finger on the third fret B string.
[F#] You strum through it.
And then you go.
So up strum.
You [B] pluck that third fret on [F#] the A and then strum through it again.
And then down, up.
[G] So when I get to that Cadd9, it should [B] go.
[F#]
[E] And that brings us to our walk up and then our walk down.
[G#] Our walk up is open A [A#] string, [B] second fret A string, third [Bm] fret A string.
And then we do our little.
[F#] [C#]
Okay?
[D] Just like in the intro.
[F#] All together very slowly, it should sound like this.
[C#] [F#]
[C#] [C#]
This time [F#] when I go, [C#] instead of hitting [G#] it twice and both strings open,
I'm only going to [C#] hit the Db string open once.
[N] Now the next part is where the wah-wah pedal comes in.
It gets a little bit harder.
And this part is actually one of the easier parts of the song.
All you're doing right here is you're keeping a D shape
and you're going [C#] from the second and third fret up to the [G#m] fifth and sixth fret
[C#] to the fourth and [D#m] fifth, [F#m] third and fourth, [G#] [C#] back to the second and third.
And you go through this a couple times, so it goes.
[G#m] [F] [F#m]
[C#] [G#m] [D]
[C#] [D#]
[C#] [C#m] [D#]
[D] And then you go [C#] into your verse again.
[B] [F#] [C#]
So when I was strumming that part, it's almost like a bridge.
I was going down, down, up, [C#m] down, down, up, down, down, up, [D#] down, down, up, down,
[D] down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up.
So down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, [N] over and over again.
You go through that a couple times, you come back to the verse.
I showed you the verse already, just piece it where it goes.
Now the last part I'm going to show you, the fun part of the song,
this is my favorite part of the song.
It goes like [C#] this.
[A]
[C#] What I was doing there was I was playing a D chord,
but I'm strumming all the strings on the guitar.
So I'm going down, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down,
down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, [G#] up.
Then I go to a B [A] flat bar chord.
Then I go, [C#] [A] so B flat bar chord's on the first and third fret.
You [B] move this to the third and fifth, and then to the fifth and seventh.
And that's the part where it says, I stay away.
So let's go through it really slowly.
[F#] [A] Same strumming pattern, and then we go.
[B] [C#] So [A] I go, [N] I strum down once, then [B] I mute it, then I go.
Mute it, so down [C#] strum, up mute.
So down, up, down, down, up.
You can [N] kind of mess around with that part.
There's really no right or wrong answer because you've got an orchestra that comes in.
You have all kinds of stuff going on, and all you are is just one dude or one chick with a guitar.
So you're kind of limited on what you can do.
Anyways, have fun with it.
This is a great song.

[F#] This is the [A] guitar lesson for I Stay Away by Alice in Chains from Guitar Made Easy.com.
The tuning for [C#] this one is Db, [G#] Ab, [F#] Db, Gb, [D#m] Bb, Eb.

[F#] Now what we're going to do is we're going to hammer on with our ring finger onto the

So down, hammer, down, up, down, up.
Down, hammer, down, up, down, up.
That's the first [G#] part.

[D] down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up.
So down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, [N] over and over again.
You go through that a couple times, you come back to the verse.
I showed you the verse already, just piece it where it goes.

Then I go to a B [A] flat bar chord.
Then I go, [C#] [A] so B flat bar chord's on the first and third fret.

[F#] _ _ This is the [A] guitar lesson for I Stay Away by Alice in Chains from Guitar Made Easy.com.
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ [C#] _
_ What I was doing there was I was taking my pointer finger, barring it over the [D#] second
fret so it hits the [G#] D, the G, and the B string.
And then I take my middle finger and I put that on the third fret on the B string.
So you should have a chord that kind of sounds like that.
[F#] Now what we're going to do is we're going to hammer on with our ring finger onto the
fourth fret on the D [C#] string. _
_ So down, hammer, down, up, down, up.
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G#] _
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ [C#] _
_ _ _ _ [G#] _ _ [N] That's the intro.
You play through that four times and then you move on to the verse.
Now, how I play the verse here is like this.
It's very similar to the intro.
It's actually an easier version of the intro.
[D#] It goes like this.
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ [C#] _
_ _ [A] What I was doing there was first I make a D chord.
_ So up strum.
You [B] pluck that third fret on [F#] the A and then strum through it again.
_ And then down, up.
[G] So when I get to that Cadd9, it should [B] go.
_ [F#] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] And that brings us to our walk up and then our walk down.
[G#] Our walk up is open A [A#] string, _ [B] second fret A string, third [Bm] fret A string.
And then we do our little.
[F#] _ _ _ [C#] _ _ _
_ Okay?
[D] Just like in the intro.
[F#] All together very slowly, it should sound like this.
[C#] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [C#] _ _ _ [C#] _
This time [F#] when I go, [C#] instead of hitting [G#] it twice and both strings open,
I'm only going to [C#] hit the Db string open once.
[N] Now the next part is where the wah-wah pedal comes in.
It gets a little bit harder.
And this part is actually one of the easier parts of the song.
All you're doing right here is you're keeping a D shape
and you're going [C#] from the second and third fret up to the [G#m] fifth and sixth fret
_ [C#] to the fourth and [D#m] fifth, [F#m] third and fourth, [G#] _ [C#] back to the second and third.
And you go through this a couple times, so it goes.
_ [G#m] _ _ [F] _ _ [F#m] _
_ [C#] _ _ [G#m] _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ [C#] _ _ _ [D#] _ _ _
_ [C#] _ _ _ [C#m] _ _ [D#] _ _
[D] _ _ _ And then you go [C#] into your verse again.
_ [B] _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ [C#] _
So when I was strumming that part, it's almost like a bridge.
I was going down, down, up, [C#m] down, down, up, down, down, up, [D#] down, down, up, down,
[D] down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up.
So down, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, [N] over and over again.
You go through that a couple times, you come back to the verse.
I showed you the verse already, just piece it where it goes.
Now the last part I'm going to show you, the fun part of the song,
this is my favorite part of the song.
It goes like [C#] this. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
[C#] _ _ _ _ What I was doing there was I was playing a D chord,
but I'm strumming all the strings on the guitar.
So I'm going down, _ _ down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down,
down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, [G#] up.
Then I go to a B [A] flat bar chord. _ _
_ Then I go, _ [C#] _ [A] so B flat bar chord's on the first and third fret.
You [B] move this to the third and fifth, and then to the fifth and seventh.
_ _ _ And that's the part where it says, I stay away.
So let's go through it really slowly. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [F#] _ [A] _ _ Same strumming pattern, and then we go.
[B] _ [C#] _ _ So [A] I go, _ [N] I strum down once, then [B] I mute it, then I go.
Mute it, so down [C#] strum, up mute.
_ _ So down, up, down, down, up.
