[G] Here is my take on an all blues easy guitar comping lesson.
Hi my dear jazz friendlings all over the world, Sandra Schurman here.
Greetings from Austria.
Let me guide you through the all blues guitar chords and the rhythm, [Fm] note for note, slow
and easy and there is also a slow tempo play through of the entire tune towards the end
of this lesson.
I've made tabs and backing tracks which you can download from one of the links down below
in the description box.
Please read the short download instructions right next to the link.
And now grab your guitar and let's get started.
[G]
[D] [G]
[Dm] [G]
[G] [Dm] [C]
[Am]
[G] [C] [G]
[C] [G]
[D] [Ebm]
[Bbm] [F]
[G] [Em]
[Bm] We are in the key of G or G7 and we have a 12 bar blues in a 6 8 meter.
Here we go.
Alright, the first 4 bars of G7 we play all diads and these are the B and the D.
That's
the 9th fret of the D string [E] and the 7th fret of the G string.
Now the root would be here, the G.
This would [G] make for a triad.
But it's not played with the root, it's just a diad.
[A] 1, 2 and on count 3 [Em] we count to 6.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, right?
We also have the accents, the stressed tones on 1 and on 4.
[A] 1, 2, [Am] 3, you go up, your index finger guides you, it's the guiding finger, 2 to the right,
that's the 9th fret of G and the 10th of the D.
1, [Bm] [Am] 2, 3.
Then on [Dm] count 4, which is a stressed, we have an accent there.
We have D and F, those are chord tones again.
Here [G] would be the G7 chord that they [Dm] are taken out of.
10 and 12 of D and G string, right?
[Bm]
1, [B] 2, [Dm] 3, 4, 5 [B] and 6 [Am] leads us back to this.
So we have the chord tones on the accented, on the stressed [Bm] beats.
1, [Am] 2, [Dm] 3, 4, 5, [A] 6.
[Dm] [Am]
[F] You play that 4 times [Bm] because we need 4 bars of G7.
[Dm] [Am]
[Bm] Second bar, [Dm] [C]
[Bm] third bar, I speed up, [Am] and [C] fourth bar.
[Dm] Alright.
[Am] Now we go to C7 for 2 bars, like in a regular blues.
And this is really cleverly done because now the whole thing is not being moved parallel
or horizontally on the fretboard, but just one tone is being exchanged and that's the
tone that does not fit the C7 chord.
[A] Remember we started down here.
[Am] This tone, the B, is [A] the major 7 of the C chord.
We don't want that because we need a C7.
[Bb] So this one is being played now.
Chord tones of C7.
Well, that's the Bb, it's the 7th, and that's the 9th.
Okay?
Basically chord tones.
And the rest remains the same.
[C] [Dm]
[Am] [A] [Am] [Dm]
[Am] Alright?
[Gm] So this is changed, [Am] this stays the same, [Dm] this stays the [C] same, and this stays the same.
And you repeat that twice [Bb] for 2 bars.
[Dm] [C] [Bb]
[Dm] [Am] Alright?
And after this you go back to G7 for 2 bars.
[Bm] And this has this interval again, 9th and 7th fret.
[Dm] [Bm] Twice.
[Am]
[Dm] [C] Right.
And now we are on the 5th degree of the scale, that's the D7.
And we have a D7 sharp 9 going on down here.
Here's a D7 sharp [F] 9.
The root is not being played, but the 5th on top, because the melody is there and also
you hear the voicings, the original voicings from the horn section.
4 of D, 5 of G, 6 of the B string and the 5th of the E string.
Alright?
And here would be the root.
It's a D7 sharp 9, [Gb] and that's [Db] the 5th, doesn't change the [B] chord name.
D7 sharp 9.
And it's played on count 4.
There's nothing on beat 1, 2, 3.
So it's 1, 2, [F] 3, 4, 5, 6.
Then we go to E flat 7 [G] sharp 9, 1 to the right, 5, 6, 7, 6.
1, 2, 3.
And now [F] we go back to D, but not exactly like this, because the B flat, you hear the B flat
tone ringing in the melody, so, or in the horn section, where I picked the chords from,
ok?
So those are basically, this is the horn section you're playing.
4, 5, 6, 6.
That's a D7 sharp 9 flat 13.
Alright?
Here would be the root again.
So you go from E flat 7 sharp [Gb] 9, 1, [A] 2, 3, [F] and rearrange those two fingers to D7 sharp
9 flat 13, or shortly, D7 altered.
D altered.
4, 5, 6. Alright?
[Gb]
[F] So, starting from D7 sharp 9 in the beginning, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
[Gb]
1, 2, [Ebm] 3, 4, 5, 6.
Now it's back to [Gb] G, but we play G9sus4 on [F] the 5th fret.
Looks [G] like a D minor 11, it's the same thing actually.
5 of [F] D, 5, 6, 5.
Top 4 strings, ok?
Again, this is the horn section.
1, 2, 3.
Now you go up 2 to the right, 7, 7, 8, 7, and this is a [G] G9.
If it's played against a G at least, [F] ok?
1, 2, [A] 3, 4, 5, 6.
Back [F] to the G9sus4.
1, 2, 3, and the G13.
That's 3, 4, [Em] 5, and 3 by barring.
Here is the root, respectively here.
Alright?
[F] So from here, 1, 2, [Em] 3, 4, 5, 6.
[G] And then you start everything all over again.
And that was it!
Alright?
Now let's listen to that whole song at slow tempo.
[G]
[C] [G] [C] [G]
[C] [G]
[C] [Bb] [C] [Am]
[Bb] [C]
[G] [C] [G]

And the rest remains the same.
_ [C] _ _ [Dm] _
_ [Am] _ _ [A] _ _ _ [Am] _ [Dm] _
_ [Am] Alright?
[Gm] So this is changed, [Am] this stays the same, _ [Dm] this stays the [C] same, and this stays the same.
And you repeat that twice [Bb] for 2 bars.
_ _ [Dm] _ _ [C] _ _ [Bb] _ _
_ [Dm] _ [Am] Alright?
And after this you go back to G7 for 2 bars.
[Bm] And this has this interval again, 9th and 7th fret. _ _ _
[Dm] _ _ _ _ [Bm] Twice.
[Am] _ _
[Dm] _ _ [C] _ Right.
And now we are on the 5th degree of the scale, that's the D7.
_ And we have a D7 sharp 9 going on down here.
Here's a D7 sharp [F] 9.
The root is not being played, but the 5th on top, _ because the melody is there and also
you hear the voicings, the original voicings from the _ _ horn section.
_ 4 of D, 5 of G, 6 of the B string and the 5th of the E string.
Then we go to E flat 7 [G] sharp 9, 1 to the right, _ 5, 6, 7, 6.
_ _ 1, 2, 3. _
And now [F] we go back to D, but not exactly like this, _ because the B flat, you hear the B flat
tone ringing in the melody, so, or in the horn section, where I picked the _ chords from,
ok?
So those are basically, _ this is the horn section you're playing. _
4, 5, 6, 6.
That's a D7 sharp 9 flat 13.
_ _ _ _ Alright?
Here would be the root again.
So you go from E flat 7 sharp [Gb] 9, 1, [A] 2, 3, _ [F] and rearrange those two fingers to D7 sharp
9 flat 13, or shortly, _ D7 altered.
D altered. _
4, 5, 6. Alright?
[Gb] _ _
_ [F] So, starting from D7 sharp 9 in the beginning, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
[Gb]
1, 2, [Ebm] 3, 4, 5, 6.
Now it's back to [Gb] G, but we play _ G9sus4 on [F] the 5th fret.
Looks [G] like a D minor 11, it's the same thing actually.
_ 5 of [F] D, 5, 6, 5.
Top 4 strings, ok?
Again, this is the horn section.
_ 1, 2, 3.
Now you go up 2 to the right, 7, 7, 8, 7, and this is a [G] G9.
_ _ If it's played against a G at least, [F] ok?
1, 2, [A] 3, 4, 5, 6.
Back [F] to the G9sus4.
_ 1, 2, 3, and the _ G13.
That's 3, 4, [Em] 5, and 3 by barring.
Here is the root, respectively here. _ _ _
Alright?
_ [F] So from here, 1, 2, [Em] 3, 4, 5, 6.
[G] And then you start everything all over again.
And that was it!
Alright?
Now let's listen to that whole song at slow tempo. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ [G] _ _ [C] _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [Am] _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _ [Bbm] _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ [Em] _ _
