[N] [D#]
Lonely Boy was a really exciting record for me to work on and that was the first
time that I think you and I kind of [C] musically bonded [Am] on your music.
We weren't just hired hands in Linda's band or something.
[B] That was an exciting
[D] record and [G#] that was, man, that was your breakthrough record.
So [F] if you
can, just [G#] do it from [D] what inspired you to write it through [E] our [C#] rehearsals right
now I'm serious.
I think [B] everybody would love to [G] hear it.
Yeah, Lonely Boy was
originally, I [D#] wrote this on the piano and the bridge was a very soft thing.
Anyway, that's how I brought it into the [E] rehearsal.
But when I was writing it, I
thought, [A#] well this is gonna be like a one of these [G] 20-minute singles.
But it
wasn't, I didn't know what I was really writing [C] about, you know, in any particular
way.
[A] After three minutes I got bored.
I went, you know, that's it.
That's enough.
It's [F#] kind of some weird sibling rivalry thing.
We went into rehearsal, which [C] was
really [G#] a real band situation at that point with Linda's band.
That was about
75, [C] maybe [G#] end of 75, 76.
[Bm] And we were touring a lot with Linda and I was
opening up [G] for Linda.
It was Mike Watts, yourself.
Yeah, and there was, I believe
it was [A#] Waddy, Wachtell, you.
Waddy Wachtell, [B] Dan Goodmore, Kenny [A#m] Edwards, and Brock
Walsh.
Yeah, killer band.
[F] And we were touring a lot so we would [B] record in
between [G] the tours basically.
The [F#] main contributors in the band, you and Waddy,
[C] were particularly [G#]
[F#m] influential.
[G] Obnoxious?
[A] You [B]
used to play Led [Am] Zeppelin stuff in the back of the bus [C] all the time, which I
loved.
[A] I grew to, I listen to that now and I just, I can smell [F#] the back of [F] the bus.
[D#] [F] You were on a piece of the bus.
It was a fun [G] time.
It was a really fun time.
[Cm] But in the
rehearsals, you were kind of organizing the [A] whole drum part, which [A#] is a very big
part of it.
[C] Especially how it starts, because I had gone like [B] blank.
But later
on, people were saying, you [D#m] know, if you don't [C] know that that's one, you can't tell
where one is until the drums come in, the day they get [A] down playing the [Bm] four.
And I
went, oh I see, it's like one, [C] two, three, four.
[D] [F] [B] Sounds [G#] corny when it's flipped over like that.
And then [D]
[A#] when the drums come in, you're going, what [A] is [F#] happening?
[E] And then [D#] Waddy and you, [G#] and I think Kenny
[A] agreed or [G] whatever it was, said, you know, instead of [C#] this quiet [E] bridge, why don't we
kick it up enough?
[F#] Let's rock and roll.
[F#m] And so it completely changed the bridge to this sort of solo.
I could add the little [G#] goodbye [F#] mamas and stuff as asides and stuff, and Waddy played a solo.
And you were playing just [A#] heavy [G#] duty drum stuff.
And it was great.
And we [F#] cut the song.
[C] And Peter said, you know, I've heard you guys play this live, because [Bm] we played it live in [C] the show.
And I think you can do it better.
And we went out for [A#] another month on a tour and played it
some more.
And we used to get standing ovations in the middle of the song, [A] because it was very
exciting, [D] even though we were still going, you know.
It was like, so we knew we had something.
So we went and cut it twice.
I would give anything to [G#] hear the first version.
That record was more or
less live.
The strings were added later.
So [C] we cut the song [A] again, and that was the one that was released.

[E] [A] He was [C#m] born on a [D] summer [E] day, [A]
1951.
[D] [E] [A] And with the slap [C#m] of a [D] hand, he had [E] landed as an [A] only son.
[D]
[G#m] His [F#] mother and father said, what [E] a lovely boy.
We'll [D] teach him what we learned.
[E] Oh yes, just what
we learned.
We'll [F#] dress him up warmly, [E] and we'll send him to school.
[D] It'll teach him how to fight
to be [C#m] the rightest fool.
[D] Oh,
[C#m] [C]
[B] what a [D] lonely boy.
[A] Oh, what a lonely boy.
[D] [E]
[A] [D]
[E] [A] In the [C#m] summer of [D]
53, [E] his mother [A] brought him a sister.
[D] [E] [A] She told him, [C#m] we must attend [D] to her [E] needs.
She's so much [A] younger than you.
[D] [E]
Well, he went [F#] on the hall, [E] and he cried.
Oh, [D] how could his parents have [E] lied, when they [F#] said he was their only [E] son.
He [D] thought he was their only [C#] one.
[D] [C#m] Oh, what a lonely [C] boy.
[B] Oh, what a lonely [D] boy.
[E] Oh, what a lonely [C#m] boy.

[C#m]

She [D] gave her a son.
Oh, [E] yes, a lovely son.
[F#] They dressed him up warmly.
