Howdy everyone, welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com.
I'm Ryan Spearman and today we're going to be learning the claw hammer version of
Angeline the Baker.
We're going to do that in the key of D.
And for those of you who are new to this tune or a little confused, this tune goes by a
couple different names.
Sometimes Angeline the Baker, sometimes Angelina Baker.
That's the same old tune.
And usually it's played in the key of D, especially in the old time world.
If you're playing in a bluegrass or less genre specific situation, you might come across
this one in the key of G every once in a while.
But we're going to learn it in the key of D.
So, anyway, Angeline the Baker, grab your banjos and let's get ready to make some noise.
Alright, remember we're going to do this in the key of D.
And in order to do that, the conventional way to do that on the claw hammer style is
to tune to a double C tuning.
And then we're going to capo on the second fret.
We're going to tune the fifth string up to an A.
Double C tuning, capo on the second fret, fifth string up to an A.
That'll put you in D and then we'll be ready to get into this tune.
So I'm going to play you the first phrase or two and then I'm going to go down and break
it into measure by measure for you.
So let's take a look at that.
So to get into that first phrase of the melody, we're going to want to start with what I call
a phantom strum.
And this is something we've covered in other lessons.
The crash course for those of you who this is a new term for.
Phantom strum, we're just basically going to be missing some of the motions in our basic strum.
So we'll give it to you here, the first measure.
And notice that's essentially two basic boom chicka strums.
But we're missing boom chicka, boom chicka.
So that chick part of each strum is, we're just going to miss the string on that.
So that's the phantom strum.
You'll see that in the tab notated by parentheses.
So that's what's happening there.
One more time I'll play you that first measure then we'll move on.
If we look at the second measure, kind of the same kind of thing going on.
We're going to have another phantom note in there and we start with a hammer on to the second fret.
I'll do that for you again.
