Start Jamming...
We are not alone.
I want to dedicate this to all you who've been rabble-rousing
down there [N]
on the bridges and the [C] byways
and giving [Ab] [G]
us [Ab] fuel for change.
[G]
[Ab] [G]
[C] I actually wrote this [Ab] a long time ago.
[G] I don't know what occasion.
I was living in New York, and I had the occasion
to be down in the financial [C] district
[Ab]
[G] and was [Ab] [G]
duly creeped out.
[Ab]
[G] I actually remember one of the first times I came to New York,
I think I was about 15 or 16, and I caught a van ride from Buffalo.
I knew some people there.
And so me and my friend decided to go busking,
and we made the erroneous call that we should
go where people have money.
So that's where we went.
We went way downtown.
And yeah, we got a lot [Ab]
[G] of responses, [Ab]
[G] very few of them
[C] financial.
[Ab]
A lot of, fuck, get a job and shit, you [G] know,
those [C] dudes [Ab] on their lunch hour.
[G] And then we took our $2.50 [C] that we made all [G] day,
and we were walking back up to where we were staying.
And we passed by this deli, you know, [G] some Middle Eastern guys.
And the grate was like halfway down.
But we were like, what can we get for $2 [C].50?
[Ab] And they were [G] all in there sitting around a table,
smoking [C]
cigars and playing cards.
[Ab] Place was [G] closed.
Dudes were like, come on in.
And then they saw we both had guitars, me and my friend Michael.
And they said, play us a song.
And they passed the hat around.
The [G] dudes playing cards passed the hat [Ab] around.
And they [G] made [Ab] us our dinner money.
[G]
And that's when I learned [Ab] that people that have the least
[G] give the most.
[Ab]
[G]
They were digging a new foundation [Ab] in Manhattan.
And [G] they discovered the site.
Cemetery [Ab] there.
[G] [C] Made their souls [Ab] rest easy now that lynching is frowned [G] upon.
And we've moved on to the electric [C] chair.
And I wonder, who's going [G] to be president?
[Ab] Maybe Barack [G] Obama.
Who's going to have the big blockbuster box office this summer?
Maybe we could put up a wall [Ab] between the houses
and the highway.
[G] And then you could go your way.
And I could go my [C] way.
[Ab]
[G]
[Ab]
[G] [Ab]
[G] Said [C] all the [G] radios agree with [Ab] all the TVs.
[G] And the magazines agree with [Ab] all the
[G] radios.
[C] And I keep hearing [Ab] that same damn [G] song everywhere I go.
Maybe I should put a bucket over my head
and a marshmallow in each ear.
And stumble around for another [Ab] dum-dum week,
for another [G] hum-drum hit [Abm] song to [G] appear.
[Am] [Gbm]
[F]
[E] [A] [E] [Gbm]
[F]
[A] [E] [Gbm]
[F] No band.
No band [E] here.
[Am] [Gb]
[F] Little [C] interlude.
People used to make records [Ab] as in a record of an event.
[G] The event of people playing music in a room.
Now everything is cross [Ab]-marketing.
It's sunglasses and [G] shoes or guns and booty you choose.
We got it rehashed.
We [Ab] got it half-assed.
[G] We're digging up all the raves.
And we're spinning on the [C] past.
And we can choose between the colors
[Abm] of the lipstick on the [G] horse.
[Ab]
[G] Yeah, we can choose between the colors [Ab] of the lipstick
on [G] the horse.
[Ab]
[G] Because we know the difference between the font of 20% More
and the font of [C] teriyaki.
[Ab] You tell me, how does it make [G] you feel?
[C] You tell me.
[Ab]
You tell [G] me.
What's [Am] real?
[Gbm]
[F]
[E] [Am] [Gb]
[F]
[E] [Gbm]
[F]
[E] [Am] [Gbm]
[F] [C]
And they say that [G] alcoholics [Ab] are always alcoholics,
[G] even when they dry out [Ab] my lips [G] for [C] years.
Even when they're stranded [Ab] on a small desert island
[G] with no place in 2 [Ab],000 miles to [G] buy beer.
[C] And I wonder, [G] is he different?
[Ab] Is he different?
Has he [G] changed?
What he's [Ab] about?
[G] [C] Or is he [G] just a liar [Ab] with nothing to lie [G] about?
[C] And we're headed for the same [Ab] break.
Whoa.
[G] Is there anything I can do [Ab] about anything [G] at all?
[C] It's time to go back to that corner [Ab] in Manhattan
[G] and dig deeper, dig deeper this time,
down beneath the impossible pain of our history.
Yeah, down [Ab] beneath the bedrock of the [G] mystery,
[C] beneath the [G] sewage system and the path
to train, beneath the cobblestones and the water
main, [C] beneath the traffic of [Ab] friendships and street deals,
[G] beneath the screeching of kamikaze [Ab] [G] cab wheels,
[C] beneath everything I can think [Ab] of to think about.
[G] Beneath that all, beneath [Ab] all, [G] get out.
[C] Beneath the good and [G] the [Ab] kind and the stupid and the cruel,
[G] there's a fire just [Ab] [C] waiting for you.
[G] [Ab]
[G]
[Ab] [C] [G]
[Ab] [G]
Yes, [C] waiting for you.
[Ab] [G]
[Ab] [G]
[N]
[G]
[Gb]
Thank you.
