[D] [G] I've been playing bass since [C] the mid 70s [Gm] since before I started working [G] and
And I've spent most of my career as a bass player playing Fender [C] style basses.
I really you [Gm] know
Fell in love [C] with [Bb] Fender [C] basses.
That's just [Ab] a great [G] feeling and great sounding instrument
So I'm very much attached to [D] the traditional Fender sound both in jazz [C] bass and
[Gm] P-bass I found that [C] the linear [Fm] humbuckers are a way where I can I can modernize my
[D] instrument but [G] still retain the traditional sound I'm able to get rid of the [Cm] problems with hum and noise and all [Bb] the buzz and
[G] Just the [Fm] noisy environmental stuff that creeps into your [D] sound that you really would rather [C] not have there
But retain the traditional tonality the traditional feel and sound of the jazz bass
jazz [G] bass players have [D] struggled with [C] this hum issue [F] for [Gb] years and
[F] [D] Generally the way that most jazz bass players approach it is they [C] just turn both pickups on all the time [G] and you get rid of that [C] way
[G] Unfortunately, there's some [D] really special sounds that are available [G] just playing bridge only which a lot of guys
[C] Play for a real quacky kind of punchy sound [G] or just playing the neck pickup only for a very [Fm] smooth more [F] legato sound
[C] Technology has advanced.
We've [Gm] we've ended up with [G] more and more electronic noise in our environment.
So the
The ability to get away with using single coil pickups has has [D] just
diminished tremendously [Gm] just
Guys can't get away with it, especially in the studio.
[G] There's just too much noise that
[C] in any environment [D] a cell phone noise [G] dimmers
transformer noise 60 [C] cycle hum
RF everything else there's [G] there's tremendous noise that goes on in our environment
Full of electronic devices everywhere you go.
[Cm] So you really can't get away with [C] single coil pickups in most situations unless it's non [G]-critical
outdoor gig where [F] you're playing at [Bb] somebody's you know, bar [Em] Mitzvah or something [Eb] like that might be able to get [D] away with it under those conditions, [C] but
most guys [D] can't and so [Fm] the linear humbucker is a [Gm] way [C] to
[Dm] Retain that same
[C] Single coil jazz [D] bass sound that everybody has gotten to love and it's really found its place in music
It really became popular in the 60s [Dm] and it's [Ab] got its place [E] in the musical sound.
So
They [D] enable you to [Dm] retain that traditional sound without all the hum [D] noise

String to string balance on old jazz [Gm] basses a lot of times can be off
[Dm] Especially on the higher strings as you [D] play across the neck from the [G] E and A strings as you cross into
D&G [D] a lot of times the up drops and [Fm] sometimes even on [D] a string output drop
[Gb] So we've addressed that [Gm] issue
Done a little bit of fattening [D] on the bridge pickup
So we we stayed really [C] close to the traditional [F] jazz bass tonality, [D] but we've addressed some
[Gm] Performance issues that I feel [D] make the pickup easier to play make it warm a little bit better
Just make it sound more consistent in a mix or in band situation
