Chords for Are Overdrive & Distortion Pedals Better With A Clean Or Dirty Amp?

[A] _ _ _ So I was messing around on Snapchat the other day and did a really cool piece [D] on there.

[D] And [E] [A] what I wanted to show you real quick is running through a Deluxe Reverb [E] that's cranked
on 10 [D] and _ how those dirt pedals sound through that cranked amp [A] versus through the amp way
down low like [D] on 2 or 3.
[A] It's a really clean platform.
[D] So it's a totally [A] different thing.
So my _ [E] tone with the [D] amp cranked [A] sounds like this.
And I'm playing a Les Paul by the way.

[A] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ [D] _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ So as you can see, it's a little loose on the bottom end.
Pretty common for a Deluxe Reverb style or Blackface style amp whenever you crank it
up to do that.
Still a pretty cool tone, but it's not nearly as tight.
So one of the things I like to do is pair that up with a distortion that makes it, or
an overdrive that makes it tighter.
In this case, I actually am pairing up two different ones.
I have a Maxon OD-808, which is like your 808 Tube Screamer.
And then a MXR Distortion Plus, which is like the distortion you've probably heard for years
and years and years. _
And then I have, just for fun, the Zoom Tri-Metal.
Not made to go into a dirty amp at all.
But just for fun, let's try that.
So let me kick on the 808.
Sounds like this. _

_ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ So as you can see, tightens everything up quite a bit.
Really tightens everything up.
And _ adds a little bit of gain to it as well, because we're bumping the volume, we're hitting certain frequencies.
_ By comparison, let's do the Distortion Plus.

And then just for the fun of it, let's do the Zoom Tri-Metal.

Definitely not ideal in this application.
So let's try all these same pedals on a clean amp.
I think you're going to see how everything totally changes whenever you're going through
a dirty amp versus a clean amp.
_ Alright, so I'm going to run all these pedals through a clean amp, through the same clean
amp, the Deluxe Reverb set to _ about 3 or so. _
And let's kick on the 808 first. _ _ _

_ So it definitely has that tube screamer type thing going on.
Sounds nothing like it did through the dirty amp, of course.

amp and through a dirty amp.
_ So if you have, like your favorite player uses a tube screamer, for example, and you're
trying to get that tone, keep in mind that you don't know whether his amp is dirty or
clean or in between, because that makes a gigantic difference.
