[Em] This is Inside Heavy's Metal Talk [B] Extra, where we take interesting tidbits from the cutting room floor [A] and
present them for your heavy metal [E] pleasure.
Our guest this go-round [E] is Joey Vera, bassist from Armored Saint.
[F#] Armored Saint and Metallica come from the same regions.
Their musical roots run deep and are intertwined,
but what you may not know is John Bush and Joey [E] Vera almost wound up as members of
Metallica, [G] leaving us to ask the question, could there [A] have been an armored Metallica?
Let's go to Joey [E] Vera for the full story.
Factor [A#] fiction.
You were [F#] considered as Cliff Burton's replacement Metallica after the band lost him in the car crash or the bus [N] crash.
Neither.
I was
the story is this.
The band after they
started regrouping and started auditioning players, they were having cattle calls basically,
meaning that everybody and their brother was going to audition for them and
it was a long arduous, depressing, frustrating
situation for them to be in.
They hated it, and so they started reaching out to people that they knew
and so that's when they reached out to me and said, look, you know, we just want to play.
We're getting tired of playing with, you know, a lot of people were just, you know, not that good.
You know, they just weren't
they were beginners.
They were all the way from beginners to good players, but just all total strangers.
So [A#] they said we want to start playing.
We want to jam with a couple people that we're friends with that we know.
So,
we'll take, you know, that's the first step, which is, you know,
we want you to come up since we know you and come up and jam and see what happened basically is all it was.
Right.
[C#]
So at this particular time, I got this phone call.
I was
halfway through recording Raising Fear and
you know, it was like, I mean, you know,
basically, it was really bad timing for me to get that call because, A, I was still in Armored Saint,
we were signed to Chrysalis Records.
We were in the middle of recording [F#] our third record.
[F] And I wasn't in a place where I was ready to say, oh, I need a change in my life, you know.
It wasn't
it just wasn't there.
I wasn't in that head place.
It didn't
It was just a bad timing for me.
[F#] And so I had to make this decision based on that, like, well, if I, you know,
I need
the only reason I would go up there and jam with them was
I have to go there with the sole intention of leaving everything I've done with Armored Saint right now and
getting into a new band.
And
it wasn't something that was a
priority for me.
So I had to decline the invitation for that.
Cool.
Well, I was very
[G] I found it to be an interesting thing that I read and I also found it to be interesting when [F] I
also read [G#] that John Bush had auditioned [E] for Metallica.
These are Wikipedia facts.
These aren't always accurate.
And I thought that was interesting because when in the world would they have been looking for [G] a singer unless it was in the recent
[F#] years when they thought they lost James [B] Hetfield?
Well, it was
It was
He never actually auditioned for them, but they did approach him to sing for them.
Right before
it was just
basically, it was right before they recorded [G] Kill Em All.
Oh, so way back.
This is way back.
Yeah.
Amazing.
Okay.
Yeah.
Amazing fact.
They must have been on the edge of a little bit of a shake-up, but held together.
Well, I think that a lot of it had to do with
them,
you know, kind of figuring out what they were doing, basically.
I mean, [G#] we're talking early, early Metallica here.
So I think in the very beginning James wasn't all that comfortable
singing, to be honest with you.
Sure.
And
he was not a very good singer in the very beginning.
He'll probably admit that too.
And [G] I think even their very first show that they played here in LA, James didn't even play guitar.
He just sang.
He just sang without a guitar.
[B] But, you know,
it kind of was like
once he started playing guitar and singing, it just sort of seemed to make sense to most of us being [F#] in the crowd.
Like, well, that's just their own thing, you know.
Sure.
[B] And so that's the reason that John declined that.
It was like, well, you know,
you don't want me to sing for you because it's gonna
completely change what you're [E] already doing here.
So he sort of like encouraged James to, you know, you should be the singer.
That's it everybody [F#] for this edition of Metal Talk Extra.
