_ Hello dear friends, today I wanted to share with you an exercise for finger independence during arpeggios.
_ _ This exercise is based on study number one by Villa-Lobos.
_ _ This study features a 16 note arpeggio cycle that sounds something like this.
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
[F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ Let me give it to you.
First, the strings that I'm plucking.
_ _ 6, 4, 5, [Em] 3, 4, 2, _ 3, 1, 2, 1, 3, 2, 4, 3, _ [Bm] 5, [E] 4. _ _
_ _ And now the fingers. _
P, _ I, [B] P, [Em] I, P, _ M, I, A, M, A, _ I, M, P, _ I, [Bm]
P, [E] I, E. _ _ _
Now in the left hand for simplicity we're just going to hold one chord.
That's E minor, _ where on the second fret you have index finger on the fifth string and middle on the fourth.
[Em] Like this.
_ _ [N] _
So the exercise calls for accenting _ _ each string individually every time you pluck it.
_ Keeping the rest of the strings sounding really softly.
So you have accent placed on one string and you're keeping the other strings quiet.
_ _ For example, we only start with one pluck on the sixth string because we only pluck that string once in a cycle.
That's our first note.
And keep the rest _ of the notes really, [E] really quiet.
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ Now the fifth string is plucked twice.
_ So we keep the rest quiet and place two accents. _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ The fourth string is plucked four times, so we have four [E] accents.
_ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
Third string is plucked four times as well.
[Bm] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Second string is plucked three [E] times.
_ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [E] _ And first string is plucked twice.
_ _ [Em] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ So _ for each one, each string that is accented, we're going to repeat _ the cycle four times before moving to the next string.
So, ready, go.
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
Great.
_ _ What else could we do? _
Well, we could accent _ either the even or odd-numbered notes.
For example, we can accent 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15.
Wow, I can't believe I just said that.
Or we can accent 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16.
_ Like this. _
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F#] And finally, just to be a little funky, we can have these accents.
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [N] _ _ [Fm] Something [E] like this. _
Alright, that was a little bit of a joke at the end.
I hope you enjoyed this exercise and you do it every day.
And it will help you to develop _ finger independence.
_ Just like it helped me.
_ _ I'll see you next
