Among the premier musicians [N] of the 60s and 70s was the rock group The Band.
They toured with Bob Dylan, they headlined at Woodstock, and the final concert of the original band members became the movie The Last Waltz.
The band's new album is their first in 18 years.
It is called Jericho, and they're going to play something from it for us this morning.
Welcome to Today, we're talking with Levon Helm, mandolin player, lead singer, and you probably drove the bus in the old days on occasion, didn't you?
I drove a Cadillac that Ronnie Hawkins used to have when he kept payments up on it.
Oh man, 18 years.
Is it like riding a bike?
I think it is.
The only thing that took us so long was a record budget.
Yeah, we all know the name of that one.
Where did the title Jericho come from?
We've got a song on there called The Caves of Jericho, a coal mining song that Richard Bell helped us put together.
How many original members are with you here today?
Well, we've got Garth Hudson here, Rick Danko and myself, then we've got Randy Sherlanti, Jimmy Weider, and Richard Bell over on piano.
Now, you're going to perform something today called Atlantic City that those of us who were born and raised in New Jersey know from another artist.
Explain the genesis of this song.
Well, this is a Bruce Springsteen song.
I think it was on his Nebraska album, and we enjoy doing it.
He wrote it originally with you in mind, or with him?
No, I don't think he had us in mind at all.
Oh, I don't know.
Don't sell yourself short.
We picked up on it through Rick Chertoff, a friend of ours, and people like it when we do it, so that's the bottom line for us.
I was talking earlier about the basement tapes.
Is there anything left you did with Dylan in somebody's attic that's going to come out?
There very well might be.
Garth would have a better handle on that.
Garth is in charge of the archives.
All right.
Well, four CDs, he's saying.
Great.
All right.
Save your money.
We'll let you go.
Atlantic City, the band.

[Em] These winners and [G] these losers, [C] and I'm sober [G] than mine.
[Em] Well, I'm tired of [G] getting caught out [C] on the [G] losing end.
[Em] So I talked to a [G] man last night, gonna [D] do a little favor for him.

[C] Well, our luck may have died [Em] and our love may have gone [C] cold,
but with you [D] forever [Em] I'll stay.
[C] We'll be born out of where [Em] the sand turns to gold.
So [D] put your stockings on, cause it might get [Em] cold.
[G] Everything dies, [C] baby, that's [G] a fact.
[Em] But maybe [G] everything that [C] dies someday [G] comes back.
