Hi there, the next subject I'd like to address in our creating a finger style arrangement series is _ _
_ _ _ _ _ improv counter lines.
Now as you just heard I have an arrangement here of Autumn Leaves.
_ [D] _ _ [E] We
have contrary motion _ _ [Gbm] _ _ [Em] _
_ _ _ [Gm] right _ _ [G]
for a melody but then [B] we're filling it up with these jazz lines _ [C] and
_ [A] _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _
_ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [Ebm] _ _ [Dm] they're kind of [G] improv _ [Cm] lines.
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _
_ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [A] _ _ [B]
Now [E] obviously we can't teach a lesson on improv now with scales
to use and all that.
That's a whole [Gb] different ballgame now but for those of you who are
experienced or who want to be experienced in playing those types of lines around your finger
style arrangement _ this is a good lesson to start with.
Now Joe Pass was the guy the master at this
and _ _ you know we've already did a lesson on counter melodies but we were talking about holding out
notes.
_ [Bm] _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[Cm] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [Em] You know those those ideas.
In here we're just letting go of the notes.
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [D] _ Play a riff, _ _ [Em] play [Bm] the _ melody, play a riff.
_ _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [E] All right so those that kind of idea is a little harder to do _ _ and again you kind of have to know _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
a
feel for it.
Now it takes a lot of nerve to play an arrangement like this because _ _ _ _ especially if
it's improv'd on the spot.
_ Now Joe could do that because he was such a great improv
_ _ improviser. _
_ _ A lot of guys who aren't as as [A] inept in that [D] area [Gm] have to [G]
kind of [F] feel the _ shivering
boots you know as you try to do [A] this because your lines might [E] be kind of [Em] funky.
So [A] _
_ _ _ this _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ arrangement I think will help you in getting a feel for that idea, for that feeling of standing
alone and just playing a line _ while nothing else is going on.
_ Also what I've tried to show in this
arrangement is the use of _ _ lines and also _ chords.
Playing just the melody by itself.
Joe used to do
that a lot which was kind of nice.
[A] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ [Gb] _ _ [G] _
In other words he wouldn't harmonize every note.
_ [Am] _
_ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [Bm] _
You know you
heard him a lot.
[Bb] _ _ _
[F] _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ So [A] you know we play [E] little tricks but we play the melody by itself [A] sometimes.
Sometimes we harmonize it, sometimes we don't.
[E] You know so this lesson I think is going to show an
arrangement of the such that I think will make you more comfortable with [Am] producing your own.
[B] We've
got some nice little [G] hotel _ _ things _ [Em] and _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _
so anyway let's get into the lesson.
We'll talk about a
lot of these things as we go along _ and _ _ let's just do it.
Here we go.
Oh wait a minute I wanted to
mention one thing before we get into it.
This is a perfect _ song if you're playing lines with a pick
and you prefer to play with a pick this would be a good one to do it on.
At least most of it.
_ [D] _ _ [G] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ [D] _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ [Bm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
[Em] So you
can be played with a pick if you want.
I prefer fingers and _ remember this is rubato style.
You
don't have to play in time.
You just want to play it as tender as you possibly can.
Speed up, slow
down _ and that's the key to it.
_ All right now this time let's get going. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
