Now, you know, from time to time people ask me,
have you heard so-and-so play?
And I'll say no, but if they're good as you say they are,
bring them on the show.
Well, Larry Olin is our guest today.
And Bradley Reeves told me about him
and asked him to get in touch with me.
And he did.
And today, you're going to hear some fine picking.
Where are you from over there?
I'm from up in Johnson City.
OK, Larry.
Johnson City.
Now, Bradley Reeves is the one who told me about you.
Tell me what Bradley Reeves does here.
He's working out of Channel 10 right now.
Yeah, he has started the Tennessee Archive
of Moving Image and Sound here in Knoxville
[C] and currently working out of WBIR,
archiving all of their old news film footage in the past.
Yeah, he's been in touch with me two or three times
and even found some old [B] stuff over there on me
not too long ago.
But anyway, it's good to have you here
on Riders of the Silver Screen.
Really appreciate you watching.
I guess you watched a show up there in Johnson City.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
And you're going to play some for us this morning.
And let's first find out a little bit more about you.
You're from Johnson City.
Yeah.
Grew up there.
You've got a boyish looking face.
And you said you've been playing 37 years.
That's hard to believe.
You must have started at two.
I think I was eight, about eight when I started.
Did Chet, obviously Chet Atkins influenced you on the guitar?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I didn't discover Chet till about,
I think I was about 11 or 12.
And I heard him on the radio one day playing Windy and Warm.
That's a great number he has out there.
Boy, that just, [D#] I couldn't figure out how in the world
somebody made a sound like that.
And of course that, you know, led me to the finger style, thumb style.
His hero was Merle Travis, from what I'm told.
And Merle did the two fingers.
And Chet created the three.
Am I right on that?
Yeah.
And it's something, it sounds like two people,
or even three [D] people playing the guitar at one time.
That's probably what amazed you about it, wasn't it?
Yeah, is how you could get, play your own accompaniment.
In effect, you play the rhythm or bass with your thumb,
and you play the melody and some, maybe some harmony
with your other two fingers or three [F#] fingers at times.
Of course.
Well, let's, how about giving us just a little bit of an example
of some of Chet's picking.
And whatever song you want to play is good,
but just tell me what it is.
Which one are you going to play?
This is an old tune called Back to the Old Smoky [C] Mountains.
All right, let's listen to it.
