Yeah, we came from three very well-known bands particularly in England, but you know we had to prove ourselves
And we we did luckily.
I mean there was a lot of luck involved
With the first year of bad company, you know we we had Peter Grant as our manager, and we were on Led Zeppelin's
Swan song so we had a lot to live up to but you know I think we we managed to
Acquit ourselves very well the thing is it wasn't actually planned to be a band
So there was no like master plan it was Paul and I
Writing songs together because we've met you know on various tours in England
He was at a bank or piece and I was in Mother whoop or we shared a lot of common interests in songs
And we just wanted to extend that just to continue to write together and make an album
We didn't really plan at that point to make a band and then I think Simon pitched up from somewhere obscure where he'd been
Brazil I was
And he said oh, we're putting up you know you want to get together and
After free because free had been you know really hard the last couple of years in free have been really yeah
Really emotionally draining and but you know I always wanted to work with Paul
And he said I'm playing with this mad guitarist
Mick Ralphs, and I love Mott because the Mott looper was so they had such a lovely
Relaxed air about them.
You know they were they were just funny and great musicians at the same time so
You know I came over to back to England.
We met met at Paul's house
The three of us well we were rehearsing in a in the barn at the bottom of my country home in England and
It was not very soundproof in fact we we terrorized the neighbors actually and we so
We had to soundproof the place and we got loads of breeze blocks to remember we go down to the pub
We'd have a few drinks
We'd come back about you know a closing time about our bus 10
It's long as out of the pub and we'd be mixing cement under spotlights and building their walls, and they were like this
It wasn't very straight it was a bit
We did make it soundproof though it was quite amazing once you close the door
It sounded like a little radio in there you open the door, and it was
You know it was very good.
Yeah, what point did you realize this could be a band well we we
When you had something going between us, you know it was a chemistry between you were starting for bass players
Yeah, that was the problem.
We could we could try about 12 bass players.
I think yeah, we had a
Had a little book with this all these different bass players and reasons why they didn't get the gig
He couldn't stop foaming
Another bloke was so nervous Alan Spenner was too good
Alan Spenner was too good, but he was also 24 hours late
Actually no it was three days late
Days three days late Alice Bennett was really great actually was from the
Joe Cockers grease pan yeah, he was he was to me
I remember you guys were so tight you actually fell out the door at the end of other song is a
It was on like a hill
You fell out the door and rolled down
So this guy's pretty good.
Yeah
Bit late when we went to the station to pick up
We went to the station to pick him up this poor bass player, and he was so ugly we said keep going
Don't stop I says too late he's seen us
[E]
Get the whole day
To make him feel good you know and one guy
We didn't get the job because he was he was so well-spoken and he turned out to be a Roger Hudson
He [Ab] went on the food
Did him a favor?
