Hello, today we are doing a tutorial of how to play Barton Hollow by the Civil Wars.
It's really pretty simple, fun to play.
So, first thing we're going to learn is that it needs to be played in dadgad, which is an alternate tuning from standard.
And it's pretty self-explanatory.
The strings are tuned as follows.
D, [A] A, [D] G, [G]
G, [D] D, D. Dadgad.
So, most of the song revolves around playing that D5 in dadgad.
So, you're going to put your pointer finger on the second fret of the G string.
And there you go, that's your D.
So, I'm going to play the main guitar part in the song first at speed, and then we'll explain it later and slow it down too.
[Dm]
[A]
[Gb] So, let's go through what exactly is going on in that.
So, [Gb] it's real simple.
Basically, your pointer finger is going to [A] stay here the whole time on that D.
And you're just going to be moving around a couple other things along the way.
So, [C] first place that you're going to put your finger is your ring finger on the third fret of this high A string.
Right there.
So, that first part [D] is
[Gb] Okay.
[N] And then you're going to do on the lower A string, also on the third fret with your middle finger, right after that.
So, all together that's going to [A] be
[D]
Okay.
[Bb] [D]
[Bb] And then the next part right after that is you're going to move your middle finger down one string, also going to be on the third fret of this [F] D string here.
[D]
[Gb] Okay.
So, slow.
Let's do the whole thing together.
[D] [A]
[Dm] [A]
[Ab] Alright, so the bridge of the song is pretty simple too.
I'll play it at speed and then we'll [Gb] explain it.
[D]
[A]
[Ab] So, what's going on there is you're playing up here on the seventh fret of the G string.
You're going to put your pointer finger there and then your middle finger on the low D [Bb] string on the eighth fret.
[E] And then the next chord is real simple.
You just lift off your middle finger [D]
and leave your pointer finger on there.
[N]
So, and he also does this cool little tapping thing.
[Gb]
[A]
[D]
[Db] Okay, so you're going to do that.
It's kind of just a good way to keep time.
And then those last couple chords that's going on [Bb] there, after you've come from here,
now you're going to go to this [A] chord, [N] which is you're just sliding your pointer finger down one fret to the sixth fret of the G string.
And then your middle finger is going to go on the seventh fret of that middle D [A] string.
And then you'll slide down here, which is [Bb] your middle finger on the second fret of the [G] middle D string.
And then your ring finger on the second fret of that [F] G string.
And [A] then right after that, it goes back into the main riff.
[Gb] Okay, the only part left is this little octave walk down at the end of the song.
So, I'm going to play it at speed and then we'll explain it.
[D]
[Bm] [Bb]
[D]
[Bm] [Bb]
[Bm] [Bb]
[A]
[D] [Gb]
Okay, so what's going on there is basically you're playing [Ab] octaves on the [D] fifth string and the third string.
Starting on the fifth and seventh fret.
[Gm] And then you're going to move down to the third and fifth [C] fret.
Two and four.
[Bm] [B]
And then one [Bb] and three.
[D]
Okay, so
[C] [Bm] [Bb]
Okay, pretty easy.
And then [Ab] that last part that it does is you're just right [A] here, that one chord that we played earlier.
And then you're going to put your ring finger up here on the third fret of that G string.
[A]
It's really tension-y, kind of a cool chord.
And then you resolve back to it.
And then end on a D.
[D]
[E] So, I hope that helps.
