Bass Guitar Lessons - Fretboard Fitness - #2 Tritone & Wholetone Stretches - Stu Hamm chords
Start Jamming...
Let me show you the first exercise that I always begin my warm-ups with.
The left hand is a combination of stretches to open up the hand
of tritones and whole tone stretches.
Stretching your hand this way
and back the other way.
Now
another thing that subliminally this is supposed to teach you is to keep your fingers
close to the fretboard.
You're going to have a hard [G] time playing [Db] these
[D] if [Abm] your hands are [D] flying all around [Ab] like [Am] that.
[Db] [F]
[A] [Bb] [Gb] So [Dm] we're trying to learn [Db] our hands to stretch out
[Ab] so we can almost play them like chords.
[A]
[Gb] And again we always want to keep our fingers
close to the [G] fretboard.
[Bb]
So we just have to press the fingers down to get the
notes to come out.
We don't have
flying fingers.
Now most of this course is about the left hand but this
practice also helps working on your right hand technique.
When switching in strings we're going to alternate fingers starting with our
first finger and then our [Db] middle
and [G] then [D] alternating on the way back [Ab] down as [D] well.
[Ab] [A] Right?
[Db] [F] And [A] alternating instead of going down [Bb] not just [Gb] pulling.
[D] [Bb] [Gb] [D]
[Bb] And also I'm going to introduce a
technique I'm going to be using a lot which is doubling up
which means we're going to start playing quarter notes.
One note for each quarter note.
Then we're going to play two
eighth notes for each note doubling up on the right hand.
Then we're going to play an eighth note for each
left hand note which is going to double up the movement on our right hand
and then we're going to play sixteenth notes with our
right hand, eighth notes on the left hand.
And then we're going to go back
to the original place of playing the quarter notes.
Now what this is supposed to do
is make things nice and even and when you come back from playing the sixteenth notes
to not rush the quarter notes and let them ring out
nice and true and remember always try to get a nice fat sound.
So I'm going to start the metronome up [G] and
there's also going to be a track where you know I encourage you to practice at your own
speed.
If you're more comfortable playing it slower or faster
then just download the tab after you're familiar with the exercise
and practice at your own speed and always practice with the metronome.
This is just the rote of getting our fingers and hands to do what they want.
Just the physical coordination needed
so that we can really begin to forget that and channel and make music.
So we're going to start the metronome now at ninety
and here we go.
One, two,
three, four.
[Db] [G] [Db] [D]
[Ab] [D] [Ab] [A]
[Db] [F] [A] We'll do [Bb] this twice
[Gb] [D] [Bb] [G]
[Db] alternating our [G] first [Db] fingers and middle [D] finger
[Ab] [D] [Ab] [A]
[Db] [F] [A] right [Gb]
now we go for two eighth [D] notes.
[Bb] [G]
[Db] [G] [Db] [D]
[Ab] [D] [Ab] [A]
[Db] [F] It's a [A] difficult stretch.
[Bb] Let's do that [Gb] again.
[D] [Bb] [G]
[Db] [G] [Db] [D]
[Ab] [D] [Ab] [A]
[Db] [Fm] Now we're going to go [A] for one [Bbm] eighth for every [Gb] note.
[D] [Bb] [Db]
[D] [Ab] [A]
Let's do that [Gb] again [Db]
[D] [A] and now it's two [Bb] sixteenths
[G]
[Db] [D] [A]
[F] [Gb] [G]
[Db] [Ab] [A]
and back to the quarter [Bb] notes.
[G]
[Db] [G] [Db] [D] Apparently I [Ab] can't talk and play [D] at the same [Ab] time.
[A]
[Db] [F] [A] [Bb]
[Gb] [D] And [Bb] two eighths.
[G]
[Db] [G] [Db] [D]
[Ab] [D] [Ab] [A]
[Db] [F] [A] [Bb]
[Gb] [D] [Bb] [G]
[D] [A]
[Bb] [Db]
[Ab] [A]
[F] [Bb] [G]
[Ab] So if you can practice that it's going to stretch your left hand to warm up
and really get your right hand being nice and precise between playing quickly and evenly
and slowly with a nice fat tongue.
