Bass Lesson: Groove is in the heart/Bringing down the Byrds: Dee-Lite/Herbie Hancock chords
Start Jamming...
Hello fat stringers and low-end lovers.
Okay, so I'm not wearing my normal t-shirt, my flair and bass t-shirt, because I've lost it.
I'm wearing a nice t-shirt that my [G] student purchased me, the Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirt.
Thank you student.
May your strings continue to be fat and your end continue to be low.
Okay, so today we are doing Grooves in the Heart by D-Lite,
originally a bass line by Herbie Hancock in a song called Bringing Down the Birds.
But today we're going to do the D-Lite version, which was played by Bootsy Collins, the one and only Bootsy Collins.
I believe that the Herbie Hancock version, his version, the original version, is in a different key anyway.
So we're just going to go ahead and do this.
And if you want to use it and transpose that to his version, then just [N] move up to, I believe it's A sharp.
I think, well, check it out yourselves.
Okay, let's get on with it then.
Right, so this song is more about, [G] not more about,
I think the tone that Bootsy gets in that bass line is as important as how you play it, I think.
I'm not entirely sure, 100%, I've got this down 100%, but if I haven't, it's damn close.
And it will get you through the night if you need it, if you're doing it in a live environment.
So yeah, work on tone.
If you're going to play it live and you're going to go out and gig it, work on your tone,
because it's very, very important in this song, I believe.
Right, so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to come to the fourth fret on [N] the E string,
this big fat one here, low end [Ab] lovers, right there.
Boom, with our index finger right there, just like that.
Hit it once, bump, okay, fingers down here, [C] hit it once, okay.
Then we're going to come to the [Gb] fourth fret on the D string, which is this string right here.
We're going to hit that once, [Ab] with the index finger again, I [Gb] believe.
Yeah, [Ab] index finger's cool.
[Gb] Okay, so we have, boom, [G] bump, it's quite a quick line.
The Herbie Hancock version is quicker than the D-Lite version.
It's like, do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do, and the D-Lite version is more laid back.
So, we've come to the fourth fret on the D string right there.
I hope you can see what I'm playing, alright.
[Ab] So we have, boom, [Gbm] okay, and then with your middle finger,
come down to the sixth fret on the [Eb] A string.
[Abm] [Eb] [Abm] Yeah, [Ebm] okay.
[G] Can you see what I'm doing there?
It's just because I've messed around with the camera angles and things.
Right, just for fingering over there.
Okay, good, [Ab] so we have, [Ab]
[Gb] [Ab] [Gb] okay, so [Eb] boom, boom, boom.
Then with your ring finger, this is the fingering I would suggest.
[G] You can use your little finger in there if you want,
but this is what I'm going with [Gb] right now.
So we have, boom.
[Ab] So we're going to come to the sixth fret on the D string.
So we [Gb] have, [Ebm] with your, [Ab] yeah, so that's with your ring finger.
[Gb] [Ab] [Ab]
Okay, then we're going to come back [N] down to the fourth fret on the D string
with our index finger.
[Ab] So we have, [Gb]
[Gb] [Ab] [Eb] okay, and then we're going to come back to the sixth fret
on the A string with our ring [Ab] finger.
So we [Gb] have, [Ab] [Eb] yeah?
You can hear it beginning to take [Ab] shape, can't you?
[Gb] [Ebm] [Db] Uh-huh, yeah, then down to the fourth fret on the A string with [Abm] our index finger.
[Ebm] So we have, [Db] [Ebm] slowly, boom.
[Db] [G] So that's that little part there.
Okay, and then we're going to come down to the fourth fret on the G string
with our old [A] index E here.
So we [Gb] have, boom, [Ab] boom, boom, [Db] boom, boom, [B] boom, boom, boom.
Right, and then we're going to come to the sixth fret on the D string
[Ab] with, [G] I would say, middle [Abm] finger.
So we have, [Ebm]
[Abm] oh, [Ab] [Db] [Ab] [Abm] yeah, middle finger, that's cool.
Okay, and then we're going to come to the sixth fret [Db] on the G string
[Abm] with our, [Ebm] hold on, [B] [Dbm] yeah, okay, with our, sorry, our ring finger right [Ab] there.
So we have, [Gb] boom, [Ebm] [Db] [B] [Dbm] okay.
[F] I hope you can see it right.
Sorry about the [Eb] angles in this lesson, [Ebm] guys.
Boom.
[Db] [B] [B] [Dbm] Okay, so we've come to the G on the sixth fret, right,
and then we're going to go [B] to the G on the fourth fret with our [Ab] index finger.
So, [Gb] yeah, [Db] [B] [B] okay, so [Ab] it's a dun, dun, [B] dun, dun.
[Ebm] Okay, boom, [Dbm] [Db] okay, and then we're going to do a hammer-on.
We're going to come to the fourth fret on the D string,
a right there with our index [Gbm] finger.
[Gm] Hammer-on to the fifth fret with your middle [Ab] finger,
and then from there, hammer-on, is it, yes, that's going to be a hammer-on, is it?
[Gbm] Yes, okay, so then we're going to come to the sixth fret with our ring finger.
So index, fourth, [G] middle, fifth, [Ab] ring, sixth.
We have [Ab] this, [Gb] yeah?
[G] [Ab] [Ab] Could be quite quick.
[Gb]
[A] So we have [Abm] slowly, [Ab] [Ebm] [B] [B] [Ab]
[Gb] [Dbm] that's [B] it, [Gb] [Gb] yeah?
[B] [Ab]
[Gm] Fun one to play, really, really fun bass line.
Is there anything else I need to talk [Ab] about that?
[Gb] I'll just quickly go through [Db] it again just in case I [B] missed anything.
[Gb] [Gb] [B] No?
[Gm] I think I just about covered it all there.
And that's [G] pretty much it.
It's quite a, well, it's not really simple because it's quite quick,
and especially the Herbie Hancock version is very [Gb] quick.
[Gbm] Is something [Ab] going on here [G] concerning this?
That's right, I know that's right, but there's something else there.
I'm not entirely sure what it is.
But as I said, that version will get you through.
Good fun song to play.
I hope you enjoyed the lesson, guys, and I'll see you in the next one.

[Abm] _ [Eb] [Abm] Yeah, [Ebm] okay.
[G] Can you see what I'm doing there?

[Ab] So we have, [Gb] _ _

[Db] [G] So that's that little part there.

Right, and then we're going to come to the sixth fret on the D string
[Ab] with, [G] I would say, middle [Abm] finger.
So we have, [Ebm]
[Abm] oh, [Ab] _ [Db] _ [Ab] _ _ [Abm] _ yeah, middle finger, that's cool.
Okay, and then we're going to come to the sixth fret [Db] on the G string
[Abm] with our, [Ebm] hold on, _ [B] _ [Dbm] yeah, okay, with our, sorry, our ring finger right [Ab] there.

[F] I hope you can see it right.
Sorry about the [Eb] angles in this lesson, [Ebm] guys.
Boom.

and then we're going to go [B] to the G on the fourth fret with our [Ab] index finger.
So, [Gb] yeah, _ [Db] _ [B] _ [B] _ okay, so [Ab] it's a dun, dun, [B] dun, dun.

a right there with our index [Gbm] finger.
[Gm] Hammer-on to the fifth fret with your middle [Ab] finger,
and then from there, hammer-on, is it, yes, that's going to be a hammer-on, is it?
[Gbm] Yes, okay, so then we're going to come to the sixth fret with our ring finger.
So index, fourth, _ [G] middle, fifth, [Ab] ring, sixth.
We have [Ab] this, [Gb] yeah?
[G] _ [Ab] [Ab] Could be quite quick.
