BASS LESSON - LINK WRAY'S THE RUMBLE chords
Start Jamming...
[E]
Okay, here are the lines we're going to be using in this video, okay?
Rumble, starting in the Kiwi, okay?
[Gm] And lines that we're going to play are going to be parallel on [D] both the A string and the
D string, and they're this, [E] the chromatic steps, which [A] is, [Gm] for those who don't know,
chromatic is just, there's no skips in between, it's just minor step intervals all the way
up, one fret at a time.
So up [E] from the E, we're going to go up [F] E, [Gb] F, F sharp, [Bb] then we're going to get to the
G [Gm] and we're going to do a triplet, G, G sharp, A.
[E] So it's E, [F]
[Gb] F, [E] F sharp, triplet, G, G sharp,
A.
And on the next string, we're going to play [A] the same fingering, starting on the seventh
fret again, and it's going to be A, [Bb] A sharp, [B] B, [A] then we're going to do C, C sharp, [C] D.
[A] [B]
Now
in between these, all of [Gm] these lines that we're playing, we're going to interrupt this
line by [D] playing two Ds.
And [E] that's how the song starts, by the way, it's not the bass playing, it's the guitar
that plays two Ds and then the song's in.
But there's one thing we have to put at the tag end of each of these lines, and here it is.
[Bb]
We're going [E] up 7, [F] 8, [Gb]
9, [G] 10, 11, 12, [A] and then we do [E] 7, [F] [D] 8, and that's the end of the line.
[Bb] I'm going to play that for you.
[F]
[G] [E] [F]
[D] And now we have the two Ds.
[E]
And on the next string, we have the same situation happening.
We have [A] [Bb] 7, [B] 8, 9, [A]
10, 11, 12, 7, [Bb] [D] 8, D, D.
D [G] is the conduit between both of the strings
that we're going to be playing.
And then [G] finally, we have the [A] turnaround, which is a [E] descending pattern coming down
from [B] B.
[Bb] [A] And it descends in quarter [B] notes.
[Bb] 1, 2, [A]
3.
[Gm] When we get to the 6th fret, we have a triplet and it goes
[Abm] A flat, [A] A, [G]
[E] to G.
So it's like [B] this.
[Bb]
[Ab] [G] [Gm]
And then we continue on with the G [Gb] flat, [F]
[E] [Eb] [D]
the first fret to the open fret, we have that
triplet, which is two notes [Eb] on the first fret, [B] one [D] note on the open.
So altogether, that [B] descending line is this.
[Bb] [A]
[Ab] [F] [E]
[D] [Eb] And then we continue.
I actually have a modified version that I do from this point on, which [B]
is
[Eb] [E]
[G] So I'm doing second fret [B] of the third string, for B.
[Bb] I'm doing the first fret of [Eb] the D string,
D sharp.
[E]
Then I'm doing an E on the 7th fret of the 3rd string.
And I'm doing [Bb] a G on the 5th fret of [G] the 2nd string, [B] altogether.
[Eb] [E] [G]
And then we come [D] back in again with the two D's.
[E] Here's the line.
[F]
[Gb] [E] [D]
[E] [F] And then [Gb]
[E] [D] [A]
we come [Bb] [B] [A]
[D] [E] [F]
[G] [E] [F] [D]
[B] [Bb] back.
[F] [E] [Eb] The whole [B]
[Bb] [E] [G] [D]
[E] [F] [G] [E]
song is like that.
We have one section that deviates, and that's what we consider the bridge of this song.
It's just over E.
Link Wray is playing a high E triad.
And he's playing very fast, fluttery pick attacks on [B] it.
And what happens in [Gm] that spot four times is we play the main line, but without the interruption [D] of the two D's.
And it's going to look like [G] this.
Four of them in a row.
[E]
[Gb] [Ab] [E] [Gb]
[F]
[E] [F] [Gb] And [A] then we move to the [Bb] next string.
[C] [A]
[Dm] And now we have [Eb] the D's.
I'm going to show you that, and I'm going to call out that part when it comes up.
So here's the music.
