Oh, when we were shooting Pay No Mind, we were working with Mark Gonzales, you know,
the legendary skateboarder.
And I was like, we gotta have him, you know, you guys gotta be street skating at night.
And he's all, that's crazy, man, skating at night.
It's like, you're gonna get hurt.
I'm like, it doesn't matter.
It's gotta be at night.
You look better, more evil, you know, because Pay No Mind is like, because Beck had those
dark lyrics about like the world blowing up and stuff.
Give [F#] the finger to the [A] rock and roll [B] singer, as he's [E] dancing upon your [B] paycheck.
The [F#] sails climb high through [A] the garbage [B] pale sky, like a giant [E] dildo [F#] crushing the sun.
[C#]
[E] That's why, [D] [C#]
Pay [E] No Mind.
[D] [C#]
Yeah, there was this bar that was up by Magic Mountain, and they served these ancient Hawaiian
tropical drinks.
[G#] And I was like, what if we had like, you know, some realtors signing a big contract and having
a big party with tropical drinks.
[G] You know, all women with, you know, older, you know, [F#] middle-aged women with [F] sweaters
on and like, you know, brooches and stuff.
[E] He goes like, I like it.
We just were making the art and the music [D#] [G] just for fun and literally to like, to do something different.
And it was, [Gm] I'd say it was like [G] anti-fashion and punk rock and all those [A] things, but it
wasn't really super [Fm] premeditated.
It was like, that was the way we were living, you know.
[E] I ain't got [D] no input, make [E] sure.
[A] [E] It will [D] be my sweet sensation.
[E] [A] I started [G#] off doing photography.
[F#] I shot a bunch of pictures for the Loser EP, the cover and the back cover and Beck and
I would just get in a car and we'd be like, we'd just drive around, try to go find, you
know, a place that looked interesting to us.
We shot a lot of them out in front of Eddie [C] Lopez's garage, who, he was the guy, the sculptor
that made the robot for the cover.
I started working on that robot in that time.
[C#m] And Beck come in to play in the house.
[D] And this time, [A] when I built that robot, he play in the Rose house, in the bar, and not
even place we go.
[G] [A] [F#] And the robot is not ready [Gm] finished because I make my [A#] ideas [N] every day, come and something,
you know.
It's not like a factory, I got to make it in the same moment.
We never quite got the right epic picture of it, so eventually we had it shot at like
a nice studio and everything for the cover.
What's the name of the sculpture, Eddie?
It's a survival from a nuclear bomb.
I remember at one point, my mom's like, invented this insane doll.
You know, my mom's always like coming up with these insane things, like, she's like, does
like these psychic commercials like Madame Cleo and like, just comes up with all these crazy ideas.
And one of them was like this doll that could change races.
And she, in her mind, it was like this doll that was very universal and would teach people
to accept different, you know, cultures and races and stuff.
But it was like, these, you put faith, like the faces of the doll would come off and you
could put like, [D] like, you could put like an [N] Asian mask on the doll and take that off and
put on an African one and stuff.
And it was just crazy.
It was called Molly by Golly.
We're like, geez, you know, this, this doll needs a song and stuff.
And I didn't, I don't think I even mentioned Beck or whatnot.
I was just like, just like, we were just kind of stuck.
And a couple days later, Steve comes up and he's just like, check it out.
Beck made a song for Molly by Golly.
[C#]
[F#] She's got a thousand different ways [C#] to have some fun.
She's changing, rearranging, she's number one of a kind.
[G#] Molly by Golly, she's a special pal [C#] of mine.
[G#] And that's just the kind of guy he [C#] was, you know.
It was just like, [D#m] you know, [D#] he just [C#] had it, music was like that for him [Fm] and he was just
totally down for whatever.
We take all those inside [E] jokes and just kind of turn them into like shots and drawings
and stuff and try to recreate them.
You know, we're not wearing the cool clothes because we can't afford them.
And we're not, you know, we're not, you know, playing the music in time and key and stuff
because we don't know how, you know.
But it [D] wasn't really an angry [C#] thing.
It was more of a celebration of that.
[E] And it was [D] like, look how much [C#] fun we're having.
