Behind The Vinyl - "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" with Midge Ure from Ultravox chords
Start Jamming...
[F#]
[G#] I haven't heard this recording of Dancing With Tears In My Eyes for a long, [E] long time.
[B]
[A] I think like most,
[F#m] most Ultravox tunes, [A]
[E] they were born from
[Bm] jams in [A] rehearsal studios.
Billy, the keyboard [F#m] player, [A] used to always [G#] come in with [A] lovely little [E] chord changes.
And you [Bm] can hear, it's a classic line-up, this is
[A] 1979 when I joined the band.
So you've got [E] electronic synthesized bass on this.
You've got Warren Can, [A] Canada's own [E]
Warren Can, on drums.
Billy Curry on [A] keyboards there.
And I'm doing guitar on this.
[E] And I remember being [A] very, very influenced [E] when I was younger.
My
[B] favorite album of all time, [A] David Bowie's Ziggy [F#] Stardust album.
[F#m] And there's a track on that [A] called Five [E] Years, which is really sad [Bm] and mournful.
And there's a [A] line in it about something about the radio or [G] a voice on the [F#m] radio.
It gave this very [A]
dystopian [E] imagery.
And [Bm] I remember that being a really haunting thing.
[A] And it's probably what turned me on to this kind of audio [D#] atmospherics [E] that Ultravox were so good at.
And [A] I had just read a book
[E] by a guy called Neville Shute.
[A] And it was called On the Beach.
[E] And the whole story was set in the 1950s.
[A] And there'd been a [E] nuclear holocaust.
And the only people [D] left [A] alive were living in Australia.
[F#] And [F#m] it was a story of all these [E]
people who knew that this impending doom [G#] was coming [Bm] towards them.
And what they would [A] choose to do in the last moments of life.
[F#m] So I wrote this, the lyrics about [A] this.
[E] About that very subject.
If you had four minutes left in [Bm] your life, what would you do?
[A] And it's quite simple really.
You can't run away.
You've got this [G] thing [E] coming towards you.
So [A] you, if you're close enough, [E] you get with the people you love.
And you put on [A] your favourite piece of music, which just happens to be four [F#m] minutes long.
And you dance with tears in your eyes.
[G]
[D]
[Bm]
[C] And people thought [A] Ultravox didn't use guitars.
Listen to that.
Put
[Bm] [F#m] [B]
[E] tears in my
[Bm] eyes.
So it was [A] a classic combination.
Again, [F#m] everyone always cited Ultravox as a [B] synthesiser band.
[E] But we used whatever [Bm] instrumentation we could.
So, [A] as I said on this, piano was very [F#m] dominant on this.
Guitar, synthesised bass, [A] drums.
[E] The idea of [Bm] incorporating every instrumentation we could get.
And [A] because of that, we made a really unique sound.
[F#m] And strangely, [A]
six years ago we got [E] back together again, almost 30 years [Bm] apart.
And the moment we plugged in in a rehearsal studio, it sounded like that.
Really weird.
[C#]
[B] [Bm]
You can actually hear us using guitar and technology.
Sampling the guitar.
[G#] Making these [F#m] noises.
[Bm]
[B] Way ahead of our time.
[G] There was actually a [A] rumour, started out of Providence, Rhode Island.
[C] Some newspaper that this was the [Am] Beatles reincarnate.
[E] Which was a very nice compliment.
I mean, [C] to say that we sound like the Beatles is a [C#m] very high compliment.
[F] To say that we are in fact them, is that compliment a [Em] hundredfold.
And her [G#] cheekbones and [F] her cracks in her face.
[A] And I said, I think Black Cars is not about a car at all.
It's [G] about this lady.
And so, [F#] thus came, [C] you know, Her Skin is Cold China White.
She's [Em] a dark angel, wearing dark
