Okay.
Just got to drop it on now, haven't I?
Where is it?
This one?
Oh, it's not right on it, I'll have a
F***ing hell, look at that.
Right, here we go.
[F] [C]
[F] There's no word yet.
[C]
[F] It's 1982, [C] in a flat in London, it's cold.
I'm sitting on [F] the floor writing, just [C] writing stream of [C] consciousness lyrics.
[G] And this song I met with you comes [F] out of that.
[G]
We'd normally been more of a [F] punk rock band, more edgy.
So this was one of our [C] first forays into verse, [F] chorus, verse, chorus.
We didn't really understand that songwriting [C] thing.
That was brought to the table by the producer, [F] Hugh Jones,
who did the After the Snow album, [C] where this song comes from.
So [F] he had a major influence on piecing all the [C] music together.
I wrote the words in probably two minutes, [F] just literally two minutes.
[C]
And it all came flowing out, which is normally how good [F] songs happen.
Not always.
[C]
[F] I like that line, [C] trapped in a state of imaginary grace.
Who knows what I was on at that point.
[F] [C] It's always amazing to play this song live, the reaction we get.
[F] It's incredible, it's really [Gm] incredible.
People go [C] absolutely nuts for this song, all over the world.
The [F] Philippines, America, here in [C] Canada.
It's been taken to the hearts of [F] people.
And I think [C] it sort of glides, I think with the acoustic guitars,
and the electric [F] guitars, it kind of glides across [C] the top of the track.
And then you've got [F] me [E] doing the vocals.
[G] And I'd always been [A] shouting on songs before.
I'd never really sung on [Em] a song, and there's not really any singing on this either.
It's more spoken.
[Am] But Hugh Jones, the producer, said,
don't [C] shout into the microphone, just talk into it.
Because I'd never [F] done that before.
[C] I was a punk rocker.
And so I did.
I just kind of stood back [F] and mouthed the words.
And I think [C] that's a lot of the attraction of the verses on [F] I Melt With You,
is that [C] almost spoken quality.
The video we made for it, [F] which was one of the biggest [C] videos on MTV that year in America,
we [F] did that for like a thousand [C] Canadian pounds, you know, nothing.
We carried all the stuff in [F] ourselves and set it all up.
[C]
[E] And it was one of the biggest [B] ever videos on MTV, around 82, 83, 84,
[Em] which is when it came out.
And [B] this is an interesting [Am] bit.
I [C] mean, the idea [F] of me humming on a song, I never would have done anything like that.
[C] Again, that was the producer, Hugh Jones, a [F] twist of my arm
and getting me to do things that at the [C] time I didn't like to do,
but when I look back at it, it's [F] amazing.
[C]
Hand claps and that drum [F] part.
[C]
That's a massive part of the song as well.
[F] Steve's keyboard line.
[C] It's a big chorus hook on it.
[F] [C] Good song, really.
[F] Here comes Elastic Band [C] Fade.
[F] [A#] There you have it, I Melt With You, modern [C] English.
[B] [E] [D] [F#m] [G] [C]
[G] [E] [D] [A] [C] [G]
[C] [G] [B] [Bm] [A] [C#m] [G]
