Behind The Vinyl: "Painted Ladies" with Ian Thomas chords
Start Jamming...
Wow
[Em] painted ladies
1973
Okay, so here was a song that came out of
Sort of my life really at that time so here.
I was the son of a former Baptist minister
now University professor
Philosophy professor, so I had lived a pretty sheltered life in the world of academe and
All of a sudden I [E] was in a band playing just the hell holes of Ontario
sharing dressing [Em] rooms with strippers
Which some of them were turning tricks on the side, so it wasn't all bad
But it was culture shock
[D] [E] And when you're stuck in some [Em] dumpy
hotel
[E] [Am]
[D] In the middle of nowhere
playing
Really [E] questionable [Am] social [D] experience
[Bm] [Am] You miss home [D] like the Dickens so lyrically
The song sort of came out of [Am] came out of that you know [D] I'd wake up the morning
you know one of the [Bm] strippers would be coming out of [E] her room and
[Em] you heading down for breakfast together and
so
It was a real
It was a real culture shock for me
now the actual song
Nothing, but really fond memories we recorded [Am] that at [Em] RCA studios on mutual [A] Street
[Em] In Toronto, I [E] think it's been torn down now because we needed another parking lot and
So we did it a night sessions because I [E] had two kids by by the time I
Signed my album deal with GRT, [Em] and I was working at CBC as a producer so at nights
I went to RCA to [D] record and
[Em]
The clavinet part did [D] not appear
Until the [Am] recording sessions I [D] had written the [Am] song in my basement.
They had these old
[D] TC-630s they were [Am] called it was a sound on sound [D] Sony tape recorder, [C] so I could stack up harmonies and [D] guitar parts
So I had [Am] the whole song [D] together
with the exception [Am] of bass and drums and
and [Em] the
[D] Clavinet was an idea of
John Lombardo's who [E] was a the producer for [Em] me on that.
I didn't want to produce my own stuff and
At that point anyway and
John Capek a wonderful writer who ends it ended up.
He wrote rhythm my heart with Mark Jordan
And a number of other great songs for other artists
[Em] John played the clavinet on painted ladies
so and then then I stacked up all the harmonies just like I did at home on my
TC-630 and then that song I just watched it sail up the charts
I often wondered why the song didn't go [B] farther than number 27 or 26 and Billboard
And then I read the book hitman and I realized
$250,000 had to change hands to break the [Bm] top 20 and
[A] And then that was just [Bm] such a revelation to me that I just [C#] thought oh
[E] What a rotten business this [A] is
It [B] because we were top 10 in in so many major cities
[Bm] and I couldn't understand how we could [F#m] be top 10 in all those cities and
Ta and [F#] just number 27 in [Em] Billboard.
It made no sense and [B] then when I was talking to
Ross Reynolds the other day about this he was the president of [E] GRT in Canada, but the mother [F#m] company in the [Bm] United States
[A]
Was chess Janice records that GRT general recorded tape [A#m] had bought [D#] and
[D] They were just cheapskates
[E] They wanted they [Bm] just sort of threw everything at the [E] wall
And they weren't [A] willing to spend a penny on anything [Bm] and of course no [F#m] money would exchange hands
of course if they'd [A] chucked the
[D#] 200 grand or [C] whatever it was
[B] in the album would have been front-racked and it would be a
Totally different [C] story, but that's [Dm] the
that's the nature of music [C] business some days [D] you need the
[Em] You have to [E] pave the road ahead with greenbacks and [G#] this part right here
This was me imitating thinking about Pete Townsend Townsend and won't get fooled again
[C]
[G] Can you imagine it we get to [D] the start went to three four and we're in and I [A] pressed the one key
That night I
Know I didn't know where to go
So I just sat there with it [G] thinking about what to do with it for a bit
