[F] [D#] Welcome to Eric Blackmon [D] Music.
Hi, and welcome to my bass guitar tutorial.
The guitar is tuned E, A, D, G.
And [E] here's the riff that we'll be breaking down.
[A] [F#] [A]
[Dm] [A] [E] The first thing we want to do is practice a scale that works something like this.
[F#] [G] [A] [Bm]
[C#] [D] [E] [N] Starting with the E string.
[E] Open.
Second fret.
[F#] Third [G] fret.
[A] Open A string.
Second [C#] fret.
Fourth fret.
Open [D] D string.
[E] Second fret D string.
So that's open, [Gm] two, three.
[A] Open, [B] two, [C#] four.
[D] Open, two.
[E]
[G] We're going to start with the open E string and strike it [E] three times.
And those are muted strikes.
So I'm going to take my finger and hit the string [F] and mute it out [E] immediately by touching it.
Okay?
So we've got three open E strings.
Two more.
And they're closer together.
So we've got this.
Then we're going to go to the second [F#] fret.
[G] Third fret.
Open [A] A.
[B] Second fret.
Fourth [C#] fret A string.
[E] D, [D] open.
Second [E] fret on the D string.
[F#] Then we'll go back to the A string, open, play it [A] three times.
[N] Here's the entire thing.
[E]
[F#] [E] [F#] [G] [A]
[C#] [Dm] [A]
[E] [C#] [A]
[E] [A] [C#]
[A] To [F#m] [A] [Em] start our riff, we'll play the A string [A] twice.
[N] Then we'll go to the D string on the fourth fret.
[F#] Back [A] to the A string. D string.
Fifth [G] fret D string.
[F#] Fourth fret D string.
And then open [A] A.
That's the first part.
[G] [F#] [A]
[Am] For the second part of our riff, [D#] we'll play [E] this.
[F#] [Em] [C] Now in order to play these notes, I'm muting by touching the string as I play it.
So I'm going [E] to play like that.
In order to achieve this effect, I've got my finger gently resting on the string.
And when I pick it, I get a muted effect.
So that I'm able to do this.
[F#] [Em]
So in order to play this riff, I'm going to play the low E string.
And then the open A string.
Back to the low E string.
And then hammer from fret two to fret three.
And then back to open E.
[F#] So this is what [E] we have.
So I'm touching these strings to get that muted sound.
[G] [E] [F#] And when I play the entire thing, it's going to [D] sound like this.
[A]
[F#m] [A] [F#m] [A] [E] [G] [E]
Now let's do a variation on that riff.
The first riff was this.
[F#] [Em]
The variation is going to be this.
[E]
So what we're doing there is playing an octave E second fret D string.
Nice little pick like that.
[N] And then we're going to play the open A string.
Open E.
And then second fret to third fret hammer.
[G] And then open E.
[C#m] So it's this.
[Em] [N] So let's play the riff with both variations.
[A] [F#] [A] [Em]
[A#] [A] [F#m] [E]
[A] [C#]
[D] [A] [G] [A]
[E] [G] [B]
[D] [A]
[E] [A#] [Gm] Well alright.
There's our riff lesson.
Thanks for stopping by.
And have a great day.

[E]
