Jam Along & Learn...
Some years ago, Bernie gave me a little slip of paper with a verse on it.
He said, can you do something with this?
Like what?
you know, we Buddhists aren't very good with melody.
Maybe you could kind of get a melody for this.
He said this was an invocation that was very key to and important in his tradition.
of Sweet Nectar.
was that, down in Mexico.

_ _ _ Some years ago, _ Bernie _ _ _ gave me a little slip of paper _ with a verse on it. _ _
He said, can you do something with this? _ _
_ _ Like what?
_ He said, well, you know, we Buddhists aren't very good with melody. _
_ Maybe you could kind of get a melody for this. _ _
He said this was _ an invocation that was very key to and important in his tradition.
_ _ And it was called the Gates of Sweet Nectar.
_ So I was on the beach in, where was that, down in Mexico.
_ _ And the whole thing, the melody came and everything.
_ I also _ _ recognized that the melody would work very well with the Hanuman Chalisa.
_ _ _ So the Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn to Hanuman, the monkey god. _
And the monkey god Hanuman represents the strength to overcome _ all obstructions, all problems,
_ anything that's in the way of us accomplishing our _ goals.
And of course our ultimate goal is to open our hearts.
So it's a way of cleaning the mirror of our hearts.
And it's an invocation to that power and strength within us.
_ So I put the two together and I wrote to him.
I said, he said, OK, now you can start working on the rest of it, which is like 50 pages. _
_ And I said, Bernie, that'll take three lifetimes.
And I get a one-word email back, two.
_ _ _ _ _ [Em] _ [Am] _ _
_ [G] _ _ So [Am] I'll sing this prayer, we'll sing it three times together.
_ [G] And then I'll sing, those of you who know the Chalisa [Am] will sing that together, and then some Sri Ram Jaya Ram.

_ [C] It's sort of a Buddhist communion, that particular, _ _ because it is, _
it is serving, _ and it's serving all the unsatisfied aspects of ourselves.
_ _ So _ I've made that the theme song of the Zen Peacemakers, it's done here every Saturday,
and the kids, when they do it, the kids are here, and the kids actually go around
and candy bars and feed all the people, you know, [G] so, _ _ _ [C] _ but it is a feed,
you first invite _ everyone into your mandala, _ into your field,
and what that means is you realize that you are all of them, you know,
_ those that are thirsting, those that are hungry, or everybody you invite in,
[Bm] and you'll see it expands, [Em] that's why we got two generations [G] of work to [Am] do.
And then you give them teachings, but then you feed [G] them.
Now you feed them the bodhi mind, which is the mind of compassion,
_ but you also feed them food, [C] and so food is gathered,
and then that food is generally given to a soup kitchen. _
_ So there's a whole thing around it.
