_ _ Okay, this is for William the musician and a few others regarding the correct melody of Beyond the Reef.
The written key is F and the key in a few books is given as C, which is outside most people's vocal range and it's also too low on the instrument.
So F is where we'll be.
And I'll play the straight melody and explain where it can go wrong.
Okay, the first part of it is_
_ [Gm] That's Beyond the Reef.
Where the sea [F] is dark and cold.
[Bb] My love has [Am] gone and my [F] dreams grow old.
Okay, now, [N] a lot of people make the mistake of playing the second part there, which is_ _
[Am] _ _ Remember me.
That part.
And a lot of people play [Db] that in the first eight, which is incorrect.
It doesn't fit with the [F] words.
It should be_
_ [Gm] _ _ _ [Am] _ _
[F] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ [Am] _
_ [F] _ Finishing on an A top note.
That's the three of the chord, not the one.
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [F] _ _
_ _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _
[Gm] _ [F] That finishes on the tonic there.
_ Will he remember me?
Will she [Dm] forget?
He or she, whichever way is your preference.
The next [N] part is the middle section.
So that's part A twice.
The only difference between the two different parts of A is the first part A finishes on the third of the chord and the second part A finishes on the tonic.
Whatever key you're in.
The middle now.
I'll send a thousand [F] flowers.
_ _ _ _ [Bb] Where the trade winds [Am] blow.
_ _ _ [F] _ _ And then I'll send my lonely heart.
[Bm] _ _ _ [Gm] _ For I love [A] her so.
_ [Gm] _ _ _ So that middle again.
[F] _ _ [Bb] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ [Bm] _ _ [Gm] _
_ [A] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [N] And then it repeats part A, but it's part A two.
That's the one that finishes [F] on the tonic.
_ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bbm] _ [F] _ [N] So that's the basics of the tune.
Remembering that part A has two different attempts at it.
The first part of part A finishes on the third of the chord, which in the key of F would [B] be an A.
And the second part, the second time A [Ab] is repeated, part A finishes on [Db] the tonic, which is the F note.
And [Eb] the composer's intent was for it to be a subdominant minor, a subdominant relative minor going to the [F] dominant seventh.
And that's the composer's intent with the chords here.
[Gm] Beyond the relief.
Because it's tension [C] leading to a release.
[F] At that point there.
So it's. _
[Gm] _ And then a [Am] five chord.
And then a [Dm] one. _
[F] And then the run down in minors as is written.
There's no diminished there.
On the original music that's a three minor, three flat [Am] minor, two minor.
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ The same again, but notice that that one finished on that top note.
The next one is the [Gm] _ _ two minor again with the relief given [Am] on the five chord.
[Dm] Back to a one.
[F] _ Then the run down on the minors.
[C] _ _ _ [Am] _ And then the final part.
Back to a tonic.
_ _ [F] _ _ _ OK, then the middle section.
I'll send a thousand flowers, which is on an F7.
[Cm] _ [Dm] _ _ [Bb] _
And then a B flat [Bbm] minor.
_ _ [F] _ Modulates down with a C minor six to [Gb] a D7 there.
Which is.
[Bbm] _ _ [F] _ _ _
[D] _ _ [Bm] That's a D7. _ _ _
[Gm] _ B flat or G minor seven. _ _ _ _
_ [F] Part A.
_ [Gm] _ _ [Am] _ _ [F] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _
