[C] [N]
[D] [Gb] It's hard to play [Abm] the guitar and not think of [A] Lenny Bro.
[Gb] [Db]
[E]
[Gb] [E] [D] [E]
[A] [D]
[E] [A] [E] It was March of [A] 1979, I [Em] came to Nashville and John Knowles took me down to meet Chet Atkins.
And Chet wasn't there and John had to go back to Blair School of Music to teach, so I just [C] hung around.
I
[E] [A]
[E] [Dbm] was down [Cm] at RCA and a car [E] pulled up and Lenny Bro got out.
[Eb]
[E] [A]
[G] Coincidentally [D] I was holding [Dm] the Lenny [G] Bro Now album in my hand.
He walked past [Em] me and he [E] got about three feet past me and he turned around and looked [Bb] at me and he says,
Is that my album?
[Eb] And I [E] looked at it and I said, I guess it is.
And [Eb] he says, well come on in here and he got his [E] guitar out and [A] said, you know you like [Dbm] my playing?
I said, oh yeah, [A] you know.
[B] So he started playing for me and [D] I told him I was there [E] to meet Chet.
[G] He goes, well I just talked to him, he's on his way down here, [Gb] just hang out with me and [E] I'll introduce you.
[C] [Gb]
[Eb]
[A] [Em] [E] We hung out, it was about an hour before Chet actually got there.
But Lenny just kept playing and playing and he [Abm] was [G] just showing me his seven string nylon [E] and he had me play it.
And I was completely lost [Gb] on that guitar, because you know, seven strings.
[Em]
[C] [Em]
[E] When Chet got there he introduced me and we [Eb] rode up the elevator to [A] Chet's office.
And I'd never met Chet Atkins [B] and I was so surprised [C] because when we got off the elevator,
Lenny says, hey Chet, this is a good friend of mine, [Em] Bill Pyburn.
[Bbm] As if I'd known him for 20 years.
[Eb] [E]
For the next two or three hours I sat around [Db] Chet's office [E] and passed the guitars [Gb] back and forth.
I [E] was so nervous because [E] I had Chet Atkins on the left hand side and Lenny Bro on the right.
[Gb] And I thought, oh my God.
[E] So the very first time I played for Lenny Bro and the [Gb] very first time I played for Chet Atkins was all in the same day.
So that was quite an experience.
[C]
[G]
[A] [E]
I spoke [Bb] with him on the phone over the next several months
[A] while he was out in Los Angeles, talked to [G] him.
I remember asking him once [Bb] about [Eb] taking some lessons [C] from him.
And he says, yeah man, come on out.
And I said, well what will you charge?
And he says, I don't know, [Dm] maybe $17 an [D] hour.
And I [Dm] laughed and I said, [Bbm] $17 an hour?
I said, you're Lenny Bro.
[Gm] I said, you need to be charging at least $100 [A] an hour.
He's like, oh, that's all right.
[D]
[G] [B] I remember one [Am] day talking to him and he says, [Bm] I'm like, man, I don't want you to think I'm some kind of religious [D] nut.
He says, but I think I'm getting in touch [D] with God with my [Bb] music.
And I [Am] said, Lenny, you did that a long time ago.
[Gm] [D] He's like, oh man, I [G] appreciate that.
[C] [Gb]
[F] [Bb] [Bbm]
[Ab] [D] It was just,
[F] speaking with him was so [D] inspiring.
And I never [C] did make it out to California, just [Dm] couldn't afford to do that.
But [Bb] just the thought of it [Dm] was enough to inspire [C] me.
[E]
[B] [G] [Gb]
[E] [D] [E]
[G] The song that I played or attempted to [Gb] play is [E]
titled [G] Lenny Blue.
[E] And I just recently wrote it for a class I was going to give at Austin University [C] up in [Em] Clarksville.
[E] And I was trying to tell the students about [D] how Lenny Bro would [Em] use the thirds and sevenths [Am] as an accompaniment [D] underlying a melody.
So I just made a little blues [Ab] tune and it [A] ended [E] up being named Lenny Blue.
[C] [A] [Em]
[E] [Em] [E]
Just [Dbm] a fun tune to [Eb] play and just kind of [A] a hint at [G] his [B] genius, but [Em] only a hint.
[E]
[A] [E] [A] That was one of the greatest moments of my [Bb] life, meeting him [E] [E] and speaking [Eb] with him.
And [Bbm] although I wish I could have spent [Ab] more time with him, it was a great inspiration.
[E] Wonderful experience.
And I probably think of him every day.
It's hard to play the guitar and not think of Lenny Bro.
[C] You know, you [Gb] have those days in your life [E] that are just like, wow.
So I've [Dm] been waiting 30 years for that day.
It's just one of those things.
