[Gb] So I was listening to the Chris Shiflett's podcast the other day called Walking the Floor,
[Bb] and he had Billy Strings on at [E] some point, [G] and he showed the host a nice lick at the
end and I thought I'd share it today.
So it's a G lick.
[Am]
It starts out of this [G] sort of C pattern up [F] here, you know, like a C bar [Em] chord sort of pattern.
The lick starts by sliding your pinky from the 8th fret to the 10th fret on the high
E, then you do [C] a little pull-off [Em] right [Am] there, [Em] then you just go down that shape a little,
[Em] [D] [Em]
[C]
then you're going to [Ab] land your pinky on the 10th fret [Em] there of the D string, [C] [Bm] slide to
the 9th fret, [B] which is already a pretty nice lick, [Am] but there's more.
[G]
[B] From that slide [Em] you're going to hit [G] the open G string, and that's going to give you a chance
to move down into the open position [E] here.
[G]
Here you're going to do a pull-off [D] on the D string, hit [G] the open G, another pull-off
[F] on the D string, [D]
[C] [G]
[D] from there you're going to do a G run, starting on the first [Bb] fret of
the A string, [B] slide to the second fret, [D]
open D, [E] second fret of D, pull [D]-off, [G] open G.
[D]
[Bb] [G] So the whole thing slowly.
1, 2, 3, 4, 1, [D] 2, 3, 4, [G]
[Dm] [Bb]
[B] [G]
1, [D] 2, 1, 2, 3.
[G]
So while we're in this area, let's learn another lick, so you'll get a bonus this time.
Here's a Tony Rice lick from his solo on Your Love is Like a Flower from one of the [B] Bluegrass
album band's records.
Now he does it in B, so it would actually be up [G] here, but since we're already in the
key of G, let's learn it here.
So again we're going to be sort of playing out of this C shape.
Here's a lick.
[C] [Gm] [G]
[C] [G]
[E] So you're going to start with the 7th fret of the G string, play 7th on the G, then 8th
on both the B and the E, [C] [Em] then down to the 7th on the E string, [E]
back to the 8th on [D] the
B string, [Em]
then go up to the 10th [D] fret of the high E, [Em]
[C] [Em] 10th on the [E] B, 8th on the B, [Em]
[Gb] [G] [Dm]
10th
on the G, [C] [E] [Dm]
7th on the [C] G, 10th on D, then 7, 10, 7 [Dm] on the G, [D] back to 10 on the D, [C] then
[E] hit the little bluesy minor 3rd to major 3rd here, [B] [E] [C]
[Dm] [Dm]
[B] then open [G] G.
Again we're going to use that to shift down here, [Bb] [E]
[G] and another G run.
[Dm] [Ebm] [G]
[Bb] [E] [G]
[C] [Em] [Dm]
[Ebm] [Bb] [G]
[E] So another very similar lick.
It's really common to get from this area back to open G land by using an open string.
Of course that's common over many chords.

[Am]

[Em] [D] [Em]
[C]

the 9th fret, [B] which is already a pretty nice lick, [Am] but there's more.
[G]
So while we're in this area, let's learn another lick, so you'll get a bonus this time.

on both the B and the E, [C] [Em] then down to the 7th on the E string, [E]
back to the 8th on [D] the
B string, [Em]
then go up to the 10th [D] fret of the high E, [Em]
